Hotaru had been applying what she learned. That was a good sign, and maybe it would save her neck in a fight that actually mattered rather than some light-hearted sparring back in Seireitei. If she happened to come across a Hollow, or even Arrancar, every little action would make the difference between life and death. The feint she was working on could be just one variable in a heated battle, but it mattered. Everything mattered, especially the details. But, most of all, a fight came down to the power of each participant, and there was a huge gap between Kagami and Hotaru. He wanted to show her exactly how big it was.
Hotaru’s would speed upwards towards Kagami, slipping right between his arms as it threatens to make a gash up the center of his chest. He didn’t move, and if Hotaru would have put too much momentum into the blade to stop it from making contact at full force. From Hotaru’s point of view, it would appear like he had allowed her a free, potentially fatal blow. However, as soon as the sword connected with Kagami, she would be in a world of pain. The Vice Captain wouldn’t receive a single cut, for the blade could not penetrate his body and stopped at his skin. At the same time, Hotaru would suffer from huge, bloody gashes up and across her right arm, making it impossible to use it and causing her extreme pain. She definitely needed urgent medical attention.
Kagami knew what was going to happen, of course, but it was necessary. His immense spiritual pressure allowed the cutback effect to damage anyone with unreleased weapons and far lower spiritual pressure that tried to physically attack him. “You cannot cut me. The difference between our power is too great, so your victory over me is impossible.” Yeah, Kagami sounded really cold right now, but there was a purpose. “Remember this moment and this pain when you train, and let it push you. The only way to get stronger is for you to realize how weak you are.” Kagami learned that lesson the hard way, and only unlocked his potential after watching his best friend parish before his eyes. He would have to provide Hotaru with the same motivation but without giving her nearly as much pain as she endured. “We’ll train again only when you prove that you can cut me. However long that takes is up to you.”
Hotaru would be in a world of pain right now, and so Kagami walked her back to the enterance of the training grounds, wrapping a nearby towel around her arm to slow the bleeding. “Walk on over to Squad 4 and have them take care of you. You should be fine by tomorrow, but I think you deserve a week off. Enjoy your vacation.” Kagami headed back to the building, slightly relieved that the training was over. He hated work and responsibility, but his mind couldn’t help but linger on Hotaru. He hoped that she used that week off to start her training, and he made a mental note to have someone check on her activity. In the meantime, he would head over to his office in the Squad 1 Barracks and procrastinate on getting some paperwork done. Or maybe enjoy a few bottles of beer. Odds are, he’d do both.
