It seemed to Ken'ichi that there was an attempted invasion of the Sereitei every other week. Whilst the newly installed sensors at the Sereitei gates provided extensive data on the combat abilities of Hellions, going through that data and cross-indexing it with handwritten reports was tedious, and tiresome. A task that Ken'ichi did not relish. The precariously balanced stacks of paper loomed ominously upon Ken'ichi's desk. Occupying every spare inch, and threatening to spill haphazardly onto the floor should Ken'ichi ignore it any longer.
Sighing to himself, Ken'ichi eyed his tatami mat, and frowned.
One of the Jeff's will certainly be along shortly with yet another report to add to the precarious pile. No matter how much This One wishes he might practice his release, so that he might perfect his Bankai, such is not the time. No matter, This One has been eagerly awaiting the battle data pertaining to Alastor, Kitai, and Orobas. Mayhap the data be buried somewhere in this pile?
Striding across the room, his zanpakutō gently tapping rhythmically against his right thigh with each step, Ken'ichi placed the three classified folders he had brought with him gently on the corner of his desk as he surveyed the mountain of other documents before him. Eying the highly sensitive documents, Ken'ichi resolved to instead place them within a drawer beneath his desk, securing it with a simple iron key.
Ken'ichi must make sure to requisition a biometric lock for this desk. Such information should never be secured with a simple key. No matter, those particular documents will not leave This One's presence and be left so unattended.
In a blur of motion, Ken'ichi began the task of sorting the mountainous stacks of documents by urgency, date, and subject matter - making sure to place the older documents with urgency on the top of each pile. While no-one were present to see Ken'ichi's lightning fast motions, had they been present they might think that the reports were defying gravity. Ken'ichi's hands moved as if with shunpō, blurring into a beautiful array and giving him the appearance of having six or more arms at any given moment. Shuffling the stacks of documents, and reports with the skill of a magician shuffling a deck of cards, it was clear that Ken'ichi took even this mundane task with the same seriousness he took to combat.
After perhaps 20 minutes of furious activity, Ken'ichi appeared satisfied with the neatly arranged documents arrayed before him. Sitting down at his desk, Ken'ichi placed a rolled up rubberized mat to his left, and unfurling it in one swift motion revealed nothing more than a simple foldable keyboard. Positioning it to his liking, Ken'ichi flicked on the monitor atop his desk, and retrieved the first classified document from his drawer. No matter how urgent the other documents may be, Ken'ichi was determined to absorb the contents of each document within his desk, before he attended to other matters. Were he anyone else save Aramis, mere possession of these documents would be tantamount to espionage. Ken'ichi resolved to commit their contents to memory swiftly, so that he might just as swiftly destroy the paper copies in his possession.
Rising from his desk, Ken'ichi crossed the floor to the door, and uttered the words to a simple bakudō barrier spell. A shimmering wall of glistening yellow light rose from the floor at his command, forming a slightly wavering, semi-transparent barrier across the sliding Shoji door. The barrier was so weak that it would not keep out any intruders, but would clearly indicate to any of his subordinates that Ken'ichi wished to remain undisturbed. Nodding once, Ken'ichi returned to his desk and looked down at the document before him.
CLASSIFIED [VC,Captain; Squad 12]: Ludwig, Battle Data: Saigo no Hōmen
The final, most powerful technique in any Shinigami's aresenal. Rare beyond even that of a Bankai, having an opportunity to study the Saigo no Hōmen of not one, but two separate combatants was something that Ken'ichi relished the thought of. Oh how such data would greatly improve his research, and help him prove his hypothesis! Ken'ichi of course was getting ahead of himself. This document required extensive study.
Hardcopies of such sensitive documents were rarely made, instead requiring the individual to access the central core directly, and read it's contents upon one of the many viewscreens it contained. Whether Aramis would frown on his vice captain removing a hardcopy of such a document from the central core, Ken'ichi did not know. Forgiveness may be sought in hindsight if necessary. But the pursuit of science sometimes demands the breaking of inconvenient rules.
Retrieving a notebook from his drawer, Ken'ichi began the careful analysis of Ludwig's Saigo no Hōmen, and the impact it had upon the battle. He was still analyzing the reiatsu strength of Ludwig's cartoonish release, when a pulse of purple energy washed over Ken'ichi followed by a dull booming BWAAARP. Claxons began sounding throughout Squad 12, alerting everyone that an experiment had gone horribly awry. Such claxons happened naturally from time to time in the SRDI, as the scientific minds of Squad 12 pierced the secrets of the universe in their multitude of fantastic, and oftentimes dangerous experiments. Ken'ichi would normally have paid it no mind, were it not for the unusualness of this particular failed experiment.
The documents on his desk stood up, and began running about his room. Ken'ichi was caught off guard by such an unexpected turn of events that for the briefest of moments he sat their stunned like some gob-smacked karp. The classified document on his desk leapt gracefully to the floor, reiatsu flaring into a bright crimson aura as it made a quick beeline to the exit. It all happened so quickly, that all Ken'ichi could do was watch helplessly as the sensitive document smashed through the barrier, melting a hole slightly large than it's own dimensions, and exited into the corridors beyond. Sensing their own opportunity, a thousand separate documents all rushed the exit in a mad-dash escape for freedom.
Ken'ichi's shock was short lived, and with one swift motion, he rose from his chair and drew his zanpakutō. The chase for the wayward paperwork was on, and Ken'ichi was not about to let their ringleader - the Saigo no Hōmen battle data, escape and fall into the wrong hands.
Just a Typical Tuesday after all. It wouldn't be Squad 12 without some experiment or other blowing up with untoward side effects. Ken'ichi thought, as he raced into the hallway after his wayward documents.
