-Basic Information-
Name: Kuro Adachihara
Age of Death: 12
Real Age/Age of Appearance: 22
Birthday (Month/Day): July 20
Blood Type: O-
RP Sample (Optional): Kuro stepped into the clearing of the woods, eyes only half open with a lazy smile on his face. He was dressed in the traditional clothes of a soul reaper with the exception of his sleeves being cut off, exposing his arms up to the shoulder. He wore his zanpakutou on his left hip, letting it sway with each step he took. He could smell the warm breeze and thought to himself, “If only everyday were as calm as this.” It brought him great joy to see the night so still, even the breeze had a lethargy to it. The overgrown grass had a sway to it as he proceeded forward, barely making an impact on the surroundings as he walked. It was almost as if Kuro were a shadow in the moonlight, only sliding over the grass and critters hiding within it. He wasn’t of the world of the living and his composure did not betray this truth.
It was when Kuro had advanced about fifteen feet he noticed it; a hollow. His eyes narrowed as he crouched slightly. He had been already keeping his spiritual pressure under control but he could see from the way the hollow moved it was searching for something, most likely him. The hollow stood a towering fourteen feet high, had a mask with a pig snout, with ripples along it’s nose, and only the upper jaw of a pig under the snout with small teeth protrusions. Where the lower half of the jaw might have been was only an orifice with a long, thick pale green tongue lolling from the opening and dragging along the ground. The torso of the beast was massive, built like a body builder from the eighties and very famous for his movies. The only difference was this creature was sporting a ten pack of muscles on the abdomen and the skin where white hierro was not present was a sickly mix of pink and purple, almost the shade of a pig’s but slightly darker. His lower half was entirely white with hierro and so were his arms from the forearms down. His legs were like that of an overly robust man with the exception of the feet where instead of finding a humanoid foot there were cloves, like that of a pig or a goat.
At this point, Kuro remained crouched in the grass, his right hand slowly moving to his left hip and grasping the handle of his zanpakutou. “This hollow might be massive,” he thought to himself,”but if I can move quickly enough this fight could be over in a flash…”
Kuro crouched further, allowing his left leg to extend back so he was almost in a runner’s pose before a race. With a surge of a shunpo with his step, Kuro flew forward while pulling his blade from his sheathe, not a sound emitting from the action with the exception of the shunpo, leaving almost a whispering collision of the air where he had once been. With his reappearance in front of the hollow, Kuro’s strike was to aim for neck. Suspended in the air in front of the hollow Kuro’s legs were still slightly bended, his feet being where the hollow’s belly button was but their faces were at eye to eye level. Kuro’s face was cold, frozen in determination to end things quickly. ”Gotcha,” was all Kuro said, the only noise he made, as he swung his sword to cleanse the hollow.

-Appearance-
Height/Weight: 6’0”/175 lbs.
Physical Description: Kuro stands tall at six feet with a wiry frame. He’s thin but muscular, sporting mostly sleeveless shirts to show off his broad shoulders. To look at him from the front would be to almost see a perfect t shape when comparing his head, torso, and shoulders. His eyes are a cold blue, not bright but instead slightly dull and emotionless. He always sports a frown upon his face, seemingly never satisfied with anything happening before him. His hair is a dark black except for the tips all around his head being a fade into stark white, the polar opposite of the rest of his hair. The length of his hair in the back only reaches to the nape of his neck while in the front it hangs just above his eyebrows. The hair he sports is slightly shaggy at the top but becomes smooth at the crown of his head into a straight and neat appearance. His eyebrows are thin and black and almost caught in a stern position, the two tips nearest each other pointing downwards towards his eyes while the farthest only remain straight, stopping just before the edge of his eyes. He has very average, unremarkable small nose on his face. He keeps himself in good shape, having the very lightest of a six pack outline when shirtless.
Kuro likes to wear his regular duty uniform most times but will usually remove any of the white from his uniform, preferring to keep it all black for stealth purposes. When he has no other choice but to wear something casual he chooses to throw off what most people would assume he would wear and instead sport a dark purple suit with a green tie and white shoes. This usually contrasts against his pale, slightly pink skin. Above his right cheek bone is a scar that runs from the bridge of his nose all the way to his right ear, being very thin with scar tissue but still visible due to the length it runs.

-Personality-
Dislikes: Loud noises- Kuro does not like surprising noises, especially when he doesn’t see them coming. These could spark outbursts from him, which are rare for him.
Disrespect- This an obvious trait in most, but Kuro doesn’t tolerate anyone being disrespected around him. “Everyone deserves respect. From the smallest ant to largest whale.” Kuro’s favorite quote when telling someone to not disrespect someone around him.
Callous people- Kuro doesn’t like when someone pushes aside the feelings of others due their own goals being in conflict with the situation.
The Weak- Not necessarily to say a weak person, but instead Kuro does not like when someone accepts defeat. He’d rather see a tactical retreat with a promise of returning to a fight rather than someone sitting in defeat, waiting for the killing blow to strike.
Upper Class- When someone holds themselves in a higher regard due to birth or status. It infuriates Kuro to no end because the only thing that determines someone being more deserving of respect in his eyes is fighting ability.
Likes: Candy- Despite his appearance and personality, Kuro has a massive sweet tooth. He will gladly take candy, but he won’t show his inner smile over it.
Meditation- Kuro can sit for hours if permitted and simply think upon the world, the balance of life and death, or simply nothing at all.
Nighttime- The cold on his skin from the wind and the moonlight shining down are the rare times when someone might catch Kuro smiling, if he hasn’t noticed their presence.
Mutual Respect- Kuro does not tolerate disrespect to anyone, but when he sees others showing mutual respect for all around them, he becomes internally overjoyed. He even shows praise of this by handing out a piece of candy to both parties, or the one that's showing respect if the other is not. If someone jests at him about it, he will just shrug as this is something he enjoys seeing.
Movies- Kuro remembers from being alive going to the movies in a big city one time with his parents. At the time the movies had been in a projector state of technology with no sound. Still, he became fascinated with the idea of capturing a moving picture. Every once in awhile he will sneak to the World of the Living to catch a movie and see how the technology has grown.
Flaws: Outburst- Rare, but possible if disrespect is found in his presence. Kuro can fly off the handle until he is held down or he exacts the punishment he deems fitting at the moment.
Communication- Kuro does not communicate well with others. He doesn’t mean to act this way, he just simply sees himself in need of completing the task(s) at hand and does so without letting his teammates know.
Callous- Although Kuro hates seeing this trait in others if he has a mind to do something he doesn’t care for explanations or others feelings on the matter. He almost sees himself in too high a light, judging without judging himself.
Scar- On the right upper cheek of his face is a scar. He hates having to explain being attacked as a child in the Rukongai near his arrival to the Soul Society.
Emotionless- After retaining his memory from years of being a plus without contact with anyone and nearly turning into a hollow over the ordeal, Kuro does not share his emotions with anyone. He feels either not close enough with someone to share or that it is a burden better handled alone.
Habits: Soft Speech- When speaking most times Kuro does not speak loudly. This is only broken during an outburst, but otherwise most people have to strain to hear what Kuro is saying.
Dull eyes- Kuro does not look at things with a “spark” in his eyes. He doesn’t show excitement or get moved to tears when told a sad story.
Soft Steps- Kuro absently attempts to make as little noise as possible when walking around or moving in general.
Fears: Explosions- Loud noises or explosions cause a reaction in Kuro to become violently angry. It’s a Fight response in his nervous system due to his fear of the loud noise and the possibility of injury.
Claustrophobia- Kuro hates tight spaces, feeling walls against his body making him uncomfortable. If left in a tight space he would begin to hyperventilate and possibly pass out.
Goals: Maggot’s Nest Execution: Kuro would like to see the Soul Society free of criminals. This would include any and all within the Maggot’s Nest face an execution.
Squad 13 Captain: Kuro aims to become the Captain of the 13th Court Guard Squad to affect how souls are treated in the World of the Living.
Alignment: Lawful Good
Overall Personality:
Kuro is a very quiet and dignified person. He believes that everyone deserves respect and that no one is truly above the other in regard to life in everything. He wouldn’t even show disrespect to a criminal or even a hollow for that matter. To be alive and fight is to be worthy of respect. But those who dismiss themselves as being worthless aren’t really alive to him. Them he ignores and leaves to their desired fate, death. This is because they, in his mind, waste a gift that was precious and if they are an enemy of his that acts in such a way he would see it as a basic sign of respect to simply put them out of their misery quickly.
If Kuro were to see someone disrespect someone, even if they are of different titles and statuses, he would have one of his rare outbursts. He would declare that if you are alive and able to fight then you deserve an equal respect to everyone of the same qualities. If someone were to try and tell him he’s wrong, the outburst would turn to violence. Kuro doesn’t care about any other arguments in general, passively letting them go on most accounts, but this would not pass him. This would also be one of the only times he would actually shout rather than speak in a soft tone.
Kuro does not boast or speak loudly with pride about anything. To be overly prideful is despicable and rude. Instead he prefers to let actions speak of his accomplishments and move on to the next task at hand. He’s very soft spoken in general, even during missions, if he speaks at all. To speak with his comrades at any other point than at the beginning or end of the mission is something Kuro would find odd. He’d most likely say, “We have a job to do, so do it.” Tactical planning isn’t something he feels is necessary and can lead to blunders if working in a team which is why Kuro believe it be best to work alone and get a job done quick.
When Kuro receives praise or candy, his favorite food group, he won’t respond in a positive or neutral manner. He just remains passive to these things. His work being done is the only important thing but beyond that to receive commendation or praise just isn’t important. One should be made a leader simply because they are good at what needs to be done, not because they’ve impressed the right people in Kuro’s mind.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Powers-
Fighting Style: Kuro prefers close combat and quick strikes rather than one massive blow. Speed is the most important aspect in battle to Kuro because if you can hit quick enough before the opponent can, then you stand a better chance in the fight. Whether that means being able to dodge or unleash a flurry of attacks. He believes that the fair fight is the one you win, so fighting dirty is not beneath him. Kuro doesn’t believe in relying on others in combat and will instead attempt to complete a fight alone. If someone were to interfere on his behalf he may try to either abandon the fight to make it more fair to the opponent or change the venue of the fight if he’s more invested in completing the job himself.
When fighting with his sealed sword, Kuro will simply attempt to strike first, fast, and as many times as he can without a counter attack occurring. He won’t rely on Kido, seeing as using those spells being a waste of breath and time. He refuses to use techniques that make him take time standing still. To do so only leaves him open, giving an enemy a chance to breathe. Kuro also doesn’t believe in immediately releasing to shikai as doing so means accepting that the fight is too difficult and he needs a helping hand from his zanpakutou spirit.
When releasing his zanpakutou to shikai Kuro will attempt to more subdue his opponent. Kuro will usually resort to this tactic if an opponent is either on par or faster than himself. This will allow him to be more trick and trap in his style of fighting, using the abilities of his zanpakutou. Kuro may also be much more angsty and anxious when using his shikai state as his weapons make him have to take the fight even closer and much more personal as they are essentially two knives. Death by a thousand cuts is a thing in this state of fighting.
To use Bankai for Kuro is to admit his opponent is faster, stronger, and more numerous than himself and must be eliminated at all costs. He can mix between direct combat, using his bladed gloves to strike a single opponent with furious swipes and long range combat, releasing his blades from his gloves and swinging in controlled patterns in order to have the wires cut his opponents and have them blades stab into an opponent that has been wrapped up in the wire. He will also attempt to summon multiple creatures depending on how many shadows are available to grab from.
If facing a group of opponents rather than his preferred one on one fight, Kuro will resort to his loathed tactic, using kido for distraction purposes. This is simply so he can separate the group one at a time. If he can do this while remaining concealed, this is much more preferred than handling it out in the open. Skulking from the shadows and taking out a group of opponents one at a time from a far is how he would approach such a situation.
Zanpakutou Spirit Appearance(Optional):[/b]
An old man carrying a sealed jar of dark, viscous liquid. He wears a blank, silver mask over the top half of his face with two eye holes that only show white staring out. The lower half of his face sports a large mustache going straight out from both sides of his lips, extending just a half inch past his ears in relativity. He has long white hair held back in a bun behind his head and wears a yellow hakama with a large black rope belt tying it tight. He is always smiling when Kuro visits, acting as if he is a caring grandfather than a guide.
Inner World(Optional):[/b]
A small dojo with tatami mats that are ripped up and walls made of paper that have growing holes in them. Outside of the Dojo is a small koi pond with dead fish inside, floating around and decomposing.
Zanpakutou Appearances:
Sealed: An average katana but has no guard above the handle.
Shikai: Transforms into two weapons of the same description. They are knives the appearance of a handle with a blade on each end, extending eight inches from the handle and curved in opposite fashions. One blade from each weapon is either black or white, both colors appearing on each weapon.
Bankai: Remaining as two weapons, they become gloves over Kuro’s hands that have blades extending from where Kuro’s knuckles are and out over his fingers and beyond. Each blade, eight in total with one blade for each finger, is a foot, or twelve inches, long. They remain straight all the way through to the tip and are sharpened along both edges. For the thumbs of the gloves, Kuro has two sharp tipped metal casings over his thumbs. Razor sharp thin wire also extends from the gloves and wraps around Kuro’s arms loosely. Kuro can release the blades from his fingers into long range blades, swung around and held to him by the wires mentioned before. He can also recall the blades back to his gloves via the wires.
Zanapkutou Release Names(Include both Shikai and Bankai names, and call out phrases)
Shikai: “Subette, Dārinshadou.” (Slip away, Darling Shadow)
Bankai: “Bankai: Āmī Obu Shadōzu, watashi ni modotte kite kudasai.” (Come back to me, Army of Shadows)
Overall Ability: Kuro’s zanpakutou activates and interacts with shadows that are cast. No matter how light the shadow is, if it exists, it can be used.
Shikai Overall Ability:
Dārinshadou allows Kuro to use shadows as portals. He can slip into and out of them at the same time, use kido through them and fire out of another, throw weapons through them, and even leave one open for someone to fall into and out of the connected shadow as a trap. When activated, the shadow turns into a viscous puddle of black liquid, becoming almost malleable. However, under normal circumstances the shape of the shadow will only change in comparison to the light and object casting it, not by touching it and trying to smear it in any way. The liquid will also under normal circumstances without an ability activation not cling to anything and cannot be pulled away from the original shape of the cast shadow. A sensation of cold liquid goes over any object or person that has the ability to feel external stimuli along with a sticky sensation. When coming out of a shadow the liquid will drain down off of the object or person in a variety of speeds depending on their own speed upon entering the shadow and matching upon their exit. The liquid will return to the exit, or secondary, shadow.
Bankai Overall Ability:
Āmī Obu Shadōzu allows Kuro to use shadows in his surroundings to spawn creatures or objects. The creatures come from three types of natures; offensive, defensive, or neutral. Beyond these basic natures the creatures are not under direct control of Kuro. The impression of their nature guides them upon their creation like releasing a beast from a cage and pointing it in the right direction. All of the creatures are consumed in black and have no facial features. Although they do not have eyes that can be seen, they do have the ability of sight, hearing, and touch. They do not have a sense of taste or smell as they have no nose or mouth and no use for these senses. Kuro cannot summon more than one creature of offensive or defensive nature or object from each shadow until the creature from said shadow has been either destroyed or recalled by Kuro unless using Kage de Sen Katto for objects.
Zanpakuto Techniques:
(Shikai) Shadoumirā (Shadow Mirror) Cost: 50 Reaitsu - Kuro can activate a primary and secondary shadow that he can see that is cast by an object or person in his vicinity. This includes his own shadow as a possibility. Once activated, the ability turns the shadows into a puddle like image, moving with viscous liquid. Kuro or any other person can use either shadow as a primary entrance and leave through the secondary shadow. They may also throw weapons or non-light emitting kido projectiles through said shadows.
A weakness to this ability is that if a bright light destroys the shadow the connection is broken. If something were in the middle of being thrown through or being transported in general through the shadow, they would be violently cast back out through the shadow they entered. Objects and persons cannot collide within the shadows as there is no space between. However, if the object or person were to make a partial entrance through the secondary shadow by more than the size of a hand, they will be cut from the point they have extended from the secondary shadow. This can allow decapitations or strangle points but can be dangerous for Kuro or an ally utilizing the shadow as a point of transportation.
Another weakness is that the size of the shadow can determine what can pass through. The shadow acts the same as a hole in the ground. If only the size of an arm can pass through or a head, that is all that will pass through. The size and shape of the shadow as stated before, is only manipulated in this technique by the person or object casting the shadow by movement in accordance with a source or sources of light around them or with an ability activation by Kuro. This also means that in an area of no sources of light being present the technique becomes useless as with no light there is no shadow.
(Shikai) Henka Suru Kage (Changing Shadow) Cost: 100 Reaitsu- Through this ability Kuro may change several variables pertaining to the shadow transportation technique. He can change the speed at which an objects transferring through the gates may travel, by either doubling or reducing the speed by half. He can also change trajectories by which the object or persons may travel out of the secondary shadow. The most useful part of this technique is that he may change the shape of the shadow by utilizing this technique. He can also change it’s size. The drawback to this technique is that the affect of the change only lasts a minute and he can only change one thing about the shadow during that time. If he were to double the speed of objects or persons leaving that shadow he would not be able to reverse it, simply wait until the time runs out.
(Bankai) Shadow Spawn: Offensive Cost: 400 Reaitsu- Kuro can summon these creatures by touching a shadow and calling out “Offensive”. The offensive nature creatures are big and bulky, standing at eight feet tall. Although they do not have eyes that can be seen, they do have the ability of sight, hearing, and touch. They do not have a sense of taste or smell as they have no nose or mouth and no use for these senses. Kuro cannot summon more than one of these creatures from the same shadow at a time. Their heads are smaller than they should be natural for the size of their bodies, being like that of a toddler. Their mass is that of a solid composition and their arms look like giant blades, no hands at the end of them. The arms extend a full six feet long, making them drag the ends along the ground when walking slowly. It’s legs have a solid muscle tone and look humanoid in shape, keeping in ratio with the body of a normal human that stand at the height of these creatures. These creatures are active and hunt for prey and can attack indiscriminately but will focus most attention on a target that is aggressive towards them. By active, it is to mean that they will run, jump, and even climb over objects in order to attack a target. They are not critical thinkers but posses a basic animalistic intelligence. These creatures remain until one of four conditions are met; Bankai ends, they are killed, Kuro recalls them to their shadow, or Kage de Sen Katto has been used.

(Bankai) Shadow Spawn: Defensive Cost: 200 Reaitsu- Kuro can summon these creatures by touching a shadow and calling out “Defensive”. The defensive creatures are ten feet tall and five feet wide, a massive lumbering creature without speed or attack power in mind behind it’s creation. It’s legs are about two feet long, holding it up and only allowing short, lumbering steps. The head of the creature looks like a horizontal oval shape, bulky and stout. It’s body is also composed of a viscous liquid, dripping along it’s path wherever the creature goes. Anything of a solid composition sticks to them, becoming slowly pulled into it’s body. Anything trapped within these creatures that is alive once the creature is recalled or killed will be left on the ground no longer stuck by the liquid shadows. Although they do not have eyes that can be seen, they do have the ability of sight, hearing, and touch. They do not have a sense of taste or smell as they have no nose or mouth and no use for these senses. Kuro cannot summon more than one of these creatures from the same shadow at a time. These lumbering creatures move at a slow pace and do not physically attack but rather move to overwhelm an opponent by catching them off guard with their slow pace and possibly absorbing them into their bodies. Their weak point is their large head, being the only solid part of their body that takes physical damage and their absorbing liquid body will still take elemental damage such as fire or a pressurized wind as example. These creatures remain until one of four conditions are met; Bankai ends, they are killed, Kuro recalls them to their shadow, or Kage de Sen Katto has been used.

(Bankai) Shadow Spawn: Neutral Cost: 200 Reaitsu- Kuro can summon these creatures by touching a shadow and calling out “Neutral”. The Neutral creatures stand at five feet and four inches and look like the average humanoid. Their bodies are solid and made of lean muscle. A mob mentality comes from these creatures as when they are summoned three come from one shadow. They are the only creature as well with mouths. When opening their mouths, it splits the head directly in half, revealing rows of black sharp triangular teeth. The mouths themselves spill viscous black liquid that sticks to anything it touches making it difficult to pull them from any target it bites. This can allow the creatures to bite even further, chewing into their target’s body. Kuro can summon three of these creatures at max from one shadow at a time. These creatures move depending upon the environment around them. If it is quiet and there is low stimuli from sound and smell as well as sight, they will meander around the area. However if extra stimuli are introduced they will run towards the target causing the stimuli and attack. These creatures remain until one of four conditions are met; Bankai ends, they are killed, Kuro recalls them to their shadow, or Kage de Sen Katto has been used.

(Bankai) Kage de Sen Katto (Thousand Cuts by Shadow) Cost: 500 Reaitsu- Kuro uses this technique as a final ability, when there is either a group too large to handle or he’s pressed to a wall and knows that he might be out of options. Once this ability is activated all creatures that have been spawned are recalled. After utilizing this technique, Bankai ends. All shadows within fifty feet of Kuro become portals and spread, raising up from the ground and swallowing the area with Kuro at the epicenter. From outside of the area it would look like a large black dome. It is impossible to enter the area while this ability is in effect. If someone were to try, they would instead transported through the shadow directly the opposite side they entered. Inside of the dome Kuro summons from all the walls of the domes a thousand black shuriken, small and sharp. He commands their movements with his hands, sending them immediately striking down from their summon point at the target Kuro commands them towards. He can choose how man by a factor of one hundred towards a target at a time. Once one thousand as a total has been reached, the Bankai ends.
Other Techniques:
Technique Name: Shunpo (Flash Steps) - Proficient
Class: 7
Technique Type: Kidō
Technique Element: None
Technique Description and Effects:
A movement technique that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow. The focal point that determines the basis of this technique is speed. As speed is the main point of the technique, the method is best characterized by how fast one can get from Point A to Point B in the least amount of steps. Training and skill are what determines how fast a user of Shunpo can move. Those of little skill in the technique or those who haven't used it for an extended amount of time would obviously be out of practice, causing those individuals to be considerably slower. This requires the use of more steps to move the same distance and become tired more easily in a shorter amount of time. A single step magnifies speed for that step by ten times. Shunpo uses fifty Reiatsu per step. This one is automatically learned in the academy. All Shinigami know this when created. This technique does not take up a technique slot.
How to use technique:
Focus of Reishi around the feet area and launch off into a single blurring step. It is not unlike teleportation in appearance, but it is simply extremely fast movement. It is often used to gain an edge in a single moment of combat or to dodge incoming attacks.
Technique Name: Advanced Air Ground - Learned
Class: 7
Technique Type: Spiritual Technique
Technique Description and Effects:
This is a technique designed especially for breakdancing and parkour, utilizing a more advanced version of air ground. While in a terrain where air ground exists, the user can create more complex surfaces like air walls, air ceilings, air ledges and even an air push. This allows the user to perform handstands and windmills on air as if it were normal ground or even stand upside-down on air as if gravity were reversed. The air push makes the air ground very elastic so that the user can jump higher. It allows for slight movement even when restrained by a Bakudō.
For a cost of twenty-five Reiatsu, the user will be able to momentarily cast an "air ground" on areas such as in Soul Society and Hueco Mundo, allowing the user to "double jump" or cast Shunpo in mid-air. If this technique is mastered, the user will be able to create air grounds that last for as long as a single post. This can be used in creative ways to improve acrobatics and visual impressiveness.
Drawback: No drawback.

History: Kuro Adachihara was once a living breathing member of the World of the Living. He grew up in a small town with close neighbors and even closer friends. It was the kind of town where they said nothing would ever happen and that there was no reason to dream or aspire to be anything more than a farmer or work at the local grocer. Many kids grew up and moved away, not returning without the call of the holidays to pull them back in. Kuro however would never experience these interactions and feelings as he never got the chance to grow up to full adulthood in the World of the Living. He would instead meet a mysterious demise that the town and local authorities would simply call a mistake or fluke of nature. A twelve year old with black hair, formerly known as Kuro Adachihara, was found drowned in the river washed up along the north bank.
After his death, Kuro remembered as a spirit seeing those whom he grew up with and his family stopping by a memorial site. He became a folk legend, a warning not to stray into the river so near to monsoon season. He enjoyed seeing people come by and wish him a happy afterlife, but he still remained. He thought he could somehow keep people away from the danger of the river by simply being there. That’s what he told himself as the years began to slip by. And as they did no one else drowned in that river.
But the consequence was that people began to forget. First it was the returning youths who had grown up that stopped coming by to visit the memorial. They had more important matters to attend and little Kuro was a distant memory to them. Those that now arrived were either has aging mother and father or teens who had misconstrued the story of Kuro’s demise and called Kuro a spirit that would drown naughty children who came to close. These devolved further into “ritual games” in order to try and anger Kuro’s spirit and cause him to try and drown the teens. Kuro grew sadder and more confused with each attempt these children made to taunt him. ”I’m not trying to hurt you, I’m trying to keep you safe.” He would make his pleas but they were fruitless. Kuro was dead and all he could do was endure that taunts. Until one day, his parents would no longer return.
It was at this time that Kuro’s mother grew ill and his father could no longer visit due to his need to take care of his wife. And Kuro waited patiently, becoming angrier and angrier with each day that came and went with no one coming to offer him a happy thought or remembrance. Only teenagers with their taunts and childish antics. He could feel something in his soul. A hole needing to be filled. Happiness to warm him. Something, anything to keep this growing hunger at bay. As the chain on his chest began to crack he heard someone from behind him. “It’s okay. I’m here to bring you peace.”
Kuro turned to face the one who spoke, knowing that they would be able to hear him as well. For the first time, he would be able to speak with someone. But before he could he saw a soul reaper, clad in black, a feminine body short and thin. And as he opened his mouth, the soul reaper rested the bottom of her blade’s handle against his forehead and performed a Konso. Without a word leaving his mouth he was sent to the Soul Society.
Where Kuro arrived was in the North Rukongai, near the mountains in a small village built with decent looking homes. Kuro still had the body of a twelve-year-old, but his mind had aged. He felt much older and wiser than a twelve-year-old and thus tried to use this to his advantage. However, he failed to realize that everyone else must have had a similar entrance into this world. When he first attempted to take advantage of another person in the Soul Society, they took pity on his ignorance. He had been trying to act as a young boy who needed food and shelter and could not fend for himself. And so the kindly woman he approached simply tossed him a spare blanket and told him if he worked in her simple bar he could have a small room in the back of the bar as a room to sleep in. The second time was not so peaceful.
Kuro attempted to pick the pocket of a man walking through the entrance to the bar as Kuro entered and the man was exiting. The man caught Kuro’s wrist easily and held Kuro up by his arm so they were face to face. ”So, we got a runt who can’t keep his fingers to himself?” Kuro, as he attempted to respond, was caught off guard as the man used his free arm to punch Kuro in the gut. As Kuro guffawed and tried to catch his breath he was tossed to the ground and then kicked in the jaw. Kuro fell back and the man knelt down, producing a knife and holding it against the bridge of Kuro’s nose. ”Got any more fire in ya?” He asked. Kuro stared up, gritting his teeth and trying to hold in his fear as he slightly shook. The man laughed and drew the blade quickly along the right side of Kuro’s face, causing him to cry out. The owner of the bar flew from behind the bar, kicking the man in the face and out of the establishment with ease. ”AND STAY OUT!” She looked down at Kuro, who had not cried out and tossed a cloth at him. ”Get your blanket and get out. Thieves aren’t welcome. That was the last favor I had for you.” Kuro, with his head held low headed to the back, collecting what food he had earned from his small job and his blanket, heading out. His niche in the town moved from the idea of being a pickpocket and instead he began to work small town jobs.
As Kuro grew and worked in the North Rukongai of the Soul Society he began thinking about the woman he had met, trying to discern the reason for her arrival. Thus he began asking around, giving the description of the woman to others. They knew exactly what kind of person he met in the World of the Living before the Konso. When he was told of the Soul Reapers and their job to balance the souls between the World of the Living and the Soul Society while also granting peace to the souls wandering the World of the Living he decided he would become one. And with that he applied to join the Shinōreijutsuin, the academy of Soul Reapers.
