Hokori had been wrong, but so had Taien. They had both been wrong. Taien had cast sai, burned reiastu to create it's elemental combination and what had happened? Nothing. Yes, that is correct. Nothing happened, why does one ask that nothing happen? Because physical contact had not been initiated between the two combatants. The weakest bakudo required one to have physical contact with the target, therefore Taien had just needlessly burned reiastu for no cost. It was a lesson for the future, however he had stacked his spells back to back so he wouldn't stop now in his barrage, Rikojokoro came down pinning Hokori. This spell was much less painful then sai would have been in considering it targeted the midsection and not the shoulders.
It was a good thing too, because Hokori using his bankai to break it as Taien raised his hand would also have a different outcome then either predicted. The papers and tomes still indeed broke the roof and surrounded both combatants and above the captain. Hokori would indeed used shunpo. And while originally Hado 63 was an incineration spell. This current version was not, and as Hokori believed he'd be sacrificing part of his bankai to protect himself. He however would only be damaging it. This raikoho when it impacted exploded as a blast of electrified spiritual earth. That meant that it didn't incinerate it targets, but shredded them. Hokori had shunpo'd into a massive volume of papers and tomes. a volume that was large by any degree and moved to help him fly through it as fast as possible, one that instead of straight incinerating it. would have to pierce an enormous quantity of paper and thick tomes. The tomes would indeed slow the fragments down further then the papers and not all would be stopped. But Hokori wouldn't be damaged as Taien had thought, had he not tampered with the spell. The sea of paper wouldn't have been there to protect Hokori to the degree that it did.
Because Taien's reiastu strength however was superior by a large margin. Hokori's bankai couldn't block all of it. shards of earth ripped through some of the paper and pierced into Hokori's right arm. The arm of the shattered collarbone. After the initial pain and the cry out by Hokori from that pain. He felt a cold sensation spreading through that arm. The electricity had numbed it, making it even further impossible to use naturally. However that was a blessing as he didn't feel most of the pain due to the numbing sensation that it had created before the spell fizzled out leaving large holes in his arm. These holes were cooked with electrical burns that had cauterized due to the high power level they possessed. In short he now had huge numb cauterized holes in his arm. But on the brightside, he didn't feel his arm for the moment.
He landed on his platform of paper just in time for him to hear in his mind Hado 88. He was covered in sweat, tired, aching, numb, burned, bruised, and just overall not having a good day. But the key pain that Taien was counting on hadn't happened. Which was the abuse to his shoulder, and in fact due to his raikoho, he couldn't for the moment feel it. Taien's hand was exploding with reiastu. How his arm didn't explode from what he was getting ready to fire was a mystery to Hokori that he didn't have time to work out. He shunpo'd as the spell began to fire. Luckily Taien's power restricted him some as it often helped him. All of taien's spells it seemed were restricted to the speed in which they were fired with. That meant that both the first shunpo and this ensuing one would still be slower then Hokori. It shot through the hole, Hokori on the other hand had some issues. Even after every thing, his body was giving him trouble. But he knew that this was Taien's big finisher if, he could dodge it he could beat the vice captain. Move.... Move... Move...! His shunpo was so strong and he pushed himself so hard that he couldn't stop himself from barreling through one of the broken roof windows that his bankai had shattered upon release. But the window at that moment wasn't the only thing that shattered, Hokori pushed himself so hard that his right leg fractured from the push. He screamed upon colliding with the paper that cushioned his fall since it was still there and not incinerated by the modified Raikoho. The papers laid him as gently as possible to the floor but as they did he gave the same attack command mentally through the pain.
His right leg was out with his left curled under him to give him support. The sphere had still formed, tendrils still curling in on Taien, and singles still flying forward from all angles. However Taien it seemed was not done just yet his arm still raised, his Sokkatsui which was first fired out. incinerating the papers and paper tendrils that were infront of him before impacting the section of the paper sphere in front of the technique master and burning that section of the sphere. It would have been the perfect place to escape if Taien had used shunpo. at the exact moment that he impacted the sphere. Which after the impact continued to swirl and closed the hole. Closing any means of escape. However he activated a second spell and that spell was Houkou Karasu. Hado 69 the Hado that is so much like a bakudo. Hokori had did research on it's creator, Takakazu Sakanoue for two reasons. First he had done it at Sayuri-Taicho's demand. Second due to the fact that that particular Technique master developed an unhealthy fixation on Sozen after the meeting with Zouma Santeku the vizard leader at the time.
He knew before hand what this technique did. But the effects of his bankai helped him out here more then ever. The tendrils behind Taien hit the wind that had begun to swirl around Taien. and absorbed it ending the technique not even breaking it's attack speed? How could this happen? Simple without imbibing it with an element, it made his defence only a little over Hokori's and because of that Hokori channeled the majority of the last of his reiastu reserve to do it. The bankai however did it naturally with Hokori's mental attack command. His mind calculated roughly that if his body were in fit shape, he'd have enough reiastu to step twice. But he ironically could do nothing of the sort anymore. But that didn't matter, Taien had used the wrong move to avoid Hokori's bankai. If it was a zanapkutou that manipulated the air there would be nothing he could do. However it was pure reiastu in the form of a kidou forcing the winds. Hokori's bankai was superior in the fact it absorbed kidou. All forms of kidou, were useless as long as he could pay reiastu to negate them.
Taien wouldn't have known this, and what was more he didn't have time to erect another defense. His body would be hit on three sides by the tendrils and then the paper singles. Each were a form of hit from Hokori's bankai. The way that Hokori's bankai worked was that instead of each paper cutting. it was each form of attack was it's own corrosion level. The tendrils were one and the papers were another. His arms and torso would be nicked by little cuts as the papers sliced into his skin and became wedged in his clothing. The tendrils cut deep into his back. and into his legs. These were all with advanced forms of corrosion into his blood stream on his skin and even fragmented onto his clothing. And something else he didn't know was that they stacked with his shikai's corrosions as well. With this he faced the regular counts of corrosion associated with two separate hits. His instinct due to that combination of hits. Would now be at twenty, his mind would be heavily fogged over and unable to tap into his release if he had one, and reiastu wouldn't be able to be tapped into anymore as a whole. His kidou patch job on his lung faded. He was unable now to use his kidou, the very lifeblood of a technique master. If he'd had a release it would have resealed by now.
Advance planning and movement would be impossible, but he wouldn't think much of that. As the final moment of Hokori's attack came when the sphere just contracted becoming tiny surrounding Taien and completely shredding his body. The papers moved at a speed stat of 400 in comparison to Taien's 250. And with only 20 instincts at the time and his mind heavily fogged over. he'd see the paper coming have no ability to use reiastu and be overwhelmed by the twisting and turning of the of the paper sphere. It would shred his body from head to toe. The good news was that he'd just be bleeding, the badness was that it would be a third attack and this would leave his instincts at 0, his limbs would no longer be functional even if he could move them due to the Ink's corrosion abilities. It was over, Hokori had won due to Taien's choice to defend instead of evade.
Hokori's bankai created a suit around the captain and it raised his left arm for him. There was pain everywhere. And Hokori with only one eye open raised his blade in defiance. Ink washed over Hokori's body, but his paper held his arm which clutched his sword. This victory should have been impossible. But it wasn't, it was just hard fought. That was the hard truth, Hokori stared at his blade and the sphere that kept twisting and turning. He wouldn't stop until he teleported, that was a cold fact. Victory with his sword high in the air was his. And he was lucky that Taien's choice was to defend and not evade because if he had evaded. The match would have been his, Hokori groaned, he was done body wise the only thing helping him stay up was his bankai. But this victory was not without its cost, it had cost him his body to do it.
