It appeared Rio had underestimated Shade, but it wasn't going to be as easy as Shade had thought. While it was true Rio had misjudged Shade, based on appearance, it wasn't wholly without basis. Rio was the Quinta Espada, and even in such a situation he wasn't completely out of options. He had mistimed his Bala, having intended it to hit the knife that Shade had thrown, but in the dark, with his eyes still recovering from the flashbang from earlier, he had fired it too late. Fortunately for Rio, two things worked in his favor.
The first was that Shade had picked a very poor target for lobbing a curved knife at. Especially a large curved knife. Certainly, if one could get a clean shot at them, the lungs were a very unpleasant organ to have damaged. And that's exactly why the body had its own defense mechanism for them. It was called the rib cage. A smaller weapon with a finer blade, like a Stiletto or a Bodkin arrow could get through easy. Even fine bladed swords like the Estoc or Rapier could. The Zaigo Hari, unfortunately, with its peculiar shaped blade, wouldn't be able to penetrate Rio's rib cage deeply enough to reach Rio's lungs, though, as Shade had inferred, would indeed be a serious wound.
Fortunately, Rio wasn't just relying on his anatomy to save him from that attack. Rio realized his mistimed attack at the instant he fired his Cero, and felt the tip of the blade strike his torso. Had his instincts been any slower, there would have been no chance of Rio reacting to the blow, but he managed to instinctively execute an unfocused shockwave to violently repel the knife. This caused a slight delay in launching his Sonido, but as Shade had abandoned his offensive maneuver, it wouldn't cost Rio too dearly.
Rio completed his Sonido as before, feeling blood spilling down from the wound Shade's knife had left. Although it was not as deep as Shade has hoped, because the knife tip had struck Rio before he realized it, even launching his shockwave to repel it, the knife had managed to touch bone, reaching Rio's ribs. Still a fairly serious puncture wound, but it wouldn't be particularly debilitating to Rio due to his incredible resiliance to pain. But, it had accomplished something more than that.
It had really pissed Rio off. The Espada's eyes flared with fury that this lieutenant could have wounded him. His senses were now coming back even his vision. Rio may have given up first blood, but if Shade wanted to see his release, he'd need to work much harder. That.... damn.... fucking.... shinigami! How many annoying tricks does he have up his sleeve!? Rio thought his eyes wild with fury. Then something occurred to him that began to calm him down. About a hair. No.... He definitely doesn't have Bakudo then. He probably thinks himself some impressive strategist. Even if that's the case then... he should have realized physical attacks aren't as effective. If he was smart he'd have used some kido spell that I couldn't block. At the very least he'd be able to know whether or not I even COULD block them. The fact that he didn't says he's either not half as smart as he thinks he is, or that he can't use kido.... Hah! A shinigami that couldn't use kido? To Rio that sounded like a frog that couldn't jump! It also massively bolstered Rio's confidence. True, this shinigami had proven he was strong enough to wound Rio, but it meant that the quality Rio hated most in shinigami wasn't going to be a factor! He could have a good old fashioned brawl! Just the way he liked it.
Since Shade had given Rio the time to determine his next course of action, Rio's sight had come back. "You won't catch me with that again, Shinigami." Rio hissed. He believed to have Shade completely figured out. Whether he had or not, Rio's new mindset could serve to aggravate Shade or give him an opening. There would be only one way to find out. And Rio wasn't one for waiting for his prey to come to him.
If Shade had located Rio after his Sonido, good for him. It wouldn't matter for long. Rio made a straight charge right at Shade. He'd flipped his Sai into a reverse grip, so that the hilt was pointing out, showing the prominent steel pommel, while his fingers folded over the guard, blade pointing backwards. The second Sai, however, remained undrawn. Was Rio deliberately taunting Shade by not using both Sai, or did he merely not deem it necessary? Shade would have to figure that out as it came, because Rio came charging straight towards him at his top speed, without Sonido.
