The early morning would allow strands of light to seek into the room through the cracks in the blinds. The sounds of people walking below and speaking could be heard in the inn, as the morning for most had already begun. Ranth would awaken to see that he was still stuck in this world. It had been less than a week, since he got here and there was no sign that he would be leaving any time soon, after all he had been given such a vague quest to complete to return to his real world that it would seem impossible to tell how far he had actually gotten.
He would hear a knock at his door as a soft voice called out to him. “Ranth~ come on sleepy head lets go, the day has started and we need to go earn some gold adventure awaits~” It was Cindy speaking to him in a cheery and happy tone that she was actually going on more missions with Ranth. Being stuck in her village for the majority of her life she was happy to travel and explore the world with him. She was smitten by him and wanted to just spend time with him.
In a teasing tone she spoke once more before running down the stairs.“If you don't hurry up I'll eat your share of breakfast for you~” By the time Ranth would make it down he would see that she was sitting down already eating her breakfast provided by the inn. It was a bit simple, some eggs, toast, and a bit of meat, possibly ham maybe chicken but one couldn't be too sure as to what it was. When all was said and done Cindy would be dragging Ranth by his arm to hurry up and go look at the new quests that would be posted.
Arriving at the guild there would be a few new quests to take on each of them had their own reward and danger. As before there was the wolf hunting quest that wanted ten wolf pelts and offered some gold. Not too exciting, but it would be a good chance to kill a few things here and there. Though the request was specifically for wolf pelts, did he or Cindy know how to properly skin a wolf? If not then this quest might be more trouble than it would be worth or they would have to pay someone to come with them and skin the wolfs eating into their profit, if they could even find someone to do that. The quest also mentioned that the western woods were where the wolves made their lair.
The next one was a bit odd, it was a request to protect someone while they go and gather some herbs in the nearby southern forest. It seems that this particular person wanted to pick some healing herbs used to make potions, but lately the wild animals have been getting a bit restless and they have gotten worried that they will attack. This mission would also involve helping carrying back some of the herbs as they would need to collect a lot more in order to offset the cost of hiring someone. This wasn't the best paying job, and honestly seemed rather boring, and lack luster, but it would leave for some time to explore the city after the mission.
The next quest was a reoccurring one that seemed to be posted by the city. It asked for adventurers to go out into the north woods and kill out some of the more annoying pests that were attacking merchents. There wasn't a specific number as to how many they wanted someone to kill, nor did it offer an actual gold reward however for each adventure that did sign up for this they would receive a bag of holding to carry back the bodies of the dead to report to the guild and earn gold for each thing killed. This seemed to offer the most flexibility in terms of quests, but the gold reward wasn't that great, but they would get free bags of holding, yet they could waste the entire day and not find a thing.
The final mission was a shocker to be sure. It seemed that a rather wealthy merchant wanted two more adventurers to help escort him to a far away town and back. He was offering food for the entire trip and even would pay for the inn fees at the next town over for the nights they would be spending there. As well as that the gold reward was higher than any of the other ones, however there was a slight issue, it seemed that doing the mission could result in Ranth spending over two weeks on this one mission easy and that was without any major complications. So now it was up to Ranth to pick what mission he wanted to take for the day.
For Ranth, the night passed him by through a deep and dreamless sleep. When he finally awoke, it was to the sound of Cindys soft knocking and the promise of her heating his share of breakfast if he didn't get up right away. Groaning softly, Ranth allowed himself a few more seconds to bask in the warmth of the early morning sun. Finally he sighed and rolled out of bed. "I'm coming", he called out to her as he got dressed and then finally opened the door to find her smiling cheerily up at him.
Breakfast was a fairly short affair, with Ranth loading his plate with eggs, sausage, baked beans and a grilled tomato before washing it down with some coffee and water for good measure before allowing himself to be dragged out of the room by Cindy- who he'd had to cajole into eating so that she wouldn't run out of energy before the day was done. Adventuring could be exhausting after all.
Once within the guild hall, Cindy came to him with four potential quests they could choose from- Ranth had no choice but to trust her judgment given that she could read and Ranth couldn't. In short, they could pursue the wolf quest that still hadn't been claimed from the previous day, or they could protect a herbalist while they hunted for potion materials, or they could exterminate miscellaneous critters. Finally, there was the option to travel abroad as the escort for a wealthy merchant caravan, but the scope of the mission would involve being away from the city for several weeks.
At a glance, from what he knew of adventuring and the world as a whole so far, he needed to kill things to acquire QP and gold and areas that were close to civilisation generally had lower difficulty opponents simply by virtue of the fact that no major cities were settled close to the habitats of the more dangerous creatures. Or at least, that's what he'd been told by the merchant who he'd chatted with during the journey between the village and the city.
So finally, Ranth narrowed it down to two possibilities. Acquiring wolf pelts or simply killing anything they came across were the two best candidates to his eyes, the only question was how Cindy would fit in. Ranth had been taught how to skin an animal by his father as a boy and in theory, Cindy would have some experience with maintaining pelts if the men in her family did any hunting and brought the pelts from their kills home.
"What do you know about skinning animals?" He asked her as he pondered his decision. If she indicated that she would be of use in some meaningful way in the process of skinning and transporting the pelts then that would be what he decided to do. If not, then they would take the quest requiring miscellaneous hunting with the logic being that it would be a good opportunity to acquire some QP to replenish their dwindling supply. It also had the additional benefit of getting to see Cindy in combat and get her some experience to boot.
Cindy would look at him for a moment and think. As she thought about how much she actually knew about skinning animals a few adventures would walk past Ranth before stopping seeing the request in his hand. “Yo you doing the wolf hunting quest? I wouldn't recommend it the reason there asking for wolf pelts is because the wolves have been hunt to almost death. We tried doing that one a month back and it took us a week to find enough stragglers to fill that request.” The two who stopped seemed to be stronger than Ranth as they both had heavy armor and under their necks he could see that they were silver ranked.
“Listen kid, do the smart thing and go take the merchant quest, the other four you'll be travailing with are a high level cleric, a powerful paladin, a master magician and a thief. Only reason that no one else has taken it is because we can't. The request asked for iron adventures only.” With that the two would walk off and out of the building. If Ranth would look back at Cindy her eyes would be filled with wonder and excitement. “Lets do that one~” After hearing the details from someone else she seemed to be memorized by the idea of travailing with such high level adventurers.
“Come Ranth, the gold is really good too. PLEASE ~” She would hold onto Ranth's arm and push her body against his so that everything would be rubbing against him. She wanted to go with them and have a real adventure and not simply kill beasts. In the end it was up to Ranth for what they would do, however Cindy would be very disappointed if they didn't go with the merchant quest.

Ranth pondered the advice of the passing adventurer seriously as he re-evaluated the best course of action. It made sense now that he thought about it that the creatures near such a large city with such a prominent adventurer population would be... over farmed was perhaps the best way to think of it. In any event, he had no reason to distrust the higher ranked adventurer and he had no desire to spend such a long period of time for such a relatively useless quest.
His reasoning for avoiding the merchant quest was simply that he didn't feel that Cindy was ready for such a task, but upon hearing that there were going to be other powerful individuals also participating made him reconsider. The innkeeper had said that the nights he'd paid for could be banked, which meant that if they left today, they'd have used one night and still have two more ready when they eventually returned.
It seemed strange that anyone would deliberately request low level adventurers for a journey such as this, but perhaps that was because they didn't have to pay as much or they were just being charitable to rookies. Ultimately though, it was Cindy's pleading expression that made him cave in. He was in a whole new world full of all manner of unique and interesting things, people and experiences. Perhaps the best thing for him to do would be to get out and see, do and experience as much as possible as quickly as possible in order to find a means of returning to where he came from.
So it was that Ranth sighed and took the merchant quest from Cindy's hands- causing her eyes to positively sparkle with delight- and took it to the clerk, who registered them for the quest and provided them with the details they would need. There wouldn't be much time until departure, so they would dash back to the inn- which was thankfully very close by- grab their things and inform the innkeeper of their plans and then made their way to the designated meeting point to meet the rest of the party.
Half an hour after they had taken the mission they would find themselves in front of two waggons with four people standing around it and another sitting on one of the two wagons waiting. Ranth would see that out of the four people standing around only one was a male. The male looked to be about in his late teens wearing no armor caring a short sword by his waist. The closest female to him seemed to be very young maybe in her early teens. She was wearing a red cloak carrying a large wooden staff that was easily her size.
The oldest looking female was wearing armor carrying a long sword that she kept at her waist side. This female would have long flowing blonde hair with shining white armor. The final female had bright blue hair and a very oddly proportioned skirt that seemed to be just long enough to cover everything, but would realistically show what was under it if she moved in any way, but didn't. Along with that she had a white staff with a pink flower on the top of it. It would be clear to Cindy and Ranth that these were the other adventurers that would be along with them on this mission. “Hey hurry on up, we gotta get going.” The male cried out to Ranth and Cindy as they approached.
There wouldn't be too much time to exchange pleasantries before everyone was forced onto one of the two wagons. From here Ranth would have the option to pick who he would sit with. In one would be the merchant, the blonde haired girl with armor as well as blue haired girl. The other would hold the single male companion and the younger girl. Whichever wagon Ranth picked to ride in Cindy would have to go in the other given the lack of space. For a while he would have the chance to ask questions and talk given the first hour or so was peaceful without any sort of attacks.
As Ranth approached the group of adventurers that were milling around and waiting for departure, it struck him they they all seemed younger than he'd been expecting. Sure, none of them were children exactly, but for some reason he'd expected 'high level adventurers' to look like they were in their thirties whereas these people looked like they could not have been much over the legal drinking age.
The fact that there was only one man amidst the group didn't mean much to Ranth, but Cindy seemed excited about seeing other female adventurers and so when the time came for them to depart, Ranth let Cindy go with the women whilst Ranth joined the group with the man. Not a whole lot was said as they rolled out of the city, though it was in large part due to the excessive noise rather than not wanting to talk.
Once they'd cleared the gate and entered the expansive field below, Ranth finally turned to the others on his wagon. "My name is Ranth, it's nice to meet you both", he said politely by way of introduction. Their wagon was the vanguard for this expedition, whilst the one carrying Cindy was a dozen paces behind them. With pleasantries exchanged, they conversation turned to the mission that they now had in common.
blue]"Rivalt is the only city I've been to, what's the place we're going to like? Have you been this way before?" This was how it started, but from there the conversation turned to things such as former accomplishments and even a few tips about how best to rank up as an adventurer. Sadly, Ranth didn't have much to contribute to the discussion of past victories, having only s a single mission under his belt, but his new companions didn't seem to mind too much.
“Nice to meet you Ranth, the name's Ryota.” The man would speak as he drove the wagon filled with various goods and trinkets. The female would be starting at Ranth with a serious look on her face as they road, not wanting to talk. After Ranth asked his question Ryota would speak. “Ehh don't know too much about it either, all I know is that it will take a while to get there. For the most part me and my group have been around Rivalt just taking the quests to the nearby towns. They're good for a quick coin and what not, but a paid ride to a new city is definitely worth it. Which is why we needed you guys.”
Ryota would go on to explain that the person who actually requested the extra adventures wasn't the merchant, it was actually his group. They actually wanted to stay in the town they would be dropping off the goods at. Given that the merchant wasn't going to restock in that town and he wouldn't need the second wagon after selling his wares he agreed to allow for a less experienced group of adventures to come with them to serve as the fall back group. It wasn't a bad thing they would just be alone for the second half of the trip.
For the moment everything seemed fine until they saw them up ahead in the road. For the most part the roads had had some trees and light bushes here and there, but up head the road was leading into a more forested area. However that wasn't what they were looking at, no instead there were two men standing in the middle of the road, both men were armed and had on some light looking leather armor. From a distance they could tell that this would mean trouble, however they couldn't exactly go around or turn back they would have to face them head on.
Ryota stepped out of the wagon stopping it about ten feet away from the men. He pulled out his sword and spoke “Alright, get on out of here, we don't want any trouble, but if you cause any I'll be happy to respond back.” He held out his sword in both hands waiting to see what would happen. It would take a bit of time for the girls to get out of their wagon and meet up with them, but while that happened two massive creatures sprung from out of the forested area. Both were massive dog like creatures that seemed to be made of shadows they lunged at Ryota. At the same time sounds could be heard of people approaching from behind the wagon.
Ranth nodded occasionally as he chatted with Ryota. The girl who sat with them seemed adverse to any kind of conversation, so Ranth didn't even bother trying to squeeze blood from a stone. As it was, he learned the names of several towns and settlements from Ryota which he and his group had visited over the past few months whilst also shedding some light upon the reason that some low class adventurers had been hired for this escort mission in the first place.
The peace and tranquility of the ride didn't last for long however, as two men emerged from the path ahead and Ryota immediately tensed. Soon their little convoy pulled to a halt and the adventurer drew his weapon as he stepped out of the wagon and gave the men an ultimatum. Evidently though, the men were in no mood to be negotiated with as two streaks of darkness burst forth from the soldier's sides.
Now Ranth had experienced enough of real combat and enough of this world to know that it would be the height of folly to charge out and engage these clearly supernatural creatures head-on. He didn't know what powers or unique traits they may have possessed and as the tied second lowest ranked member of the party, there was really no onus on him to make the first move.
As such, he drew his zanpakuto and readied himself for a fight, but he remained slightly behind Ryota to allow the man room to maneuver. Beyond that, Ranth did one other thing in preparation for the oncoming battle... he began to mentally chant the incantation for a Kido which he would be able to cast at point blank range if the shadow beast's continued their head on charge at their current speed.
The sounds of more people approaching was obvious to everyone in the convoy, but Ranth just had to assume that the other two members of Ryota's party could handle whatever was coming at them from the rear whilst Ranth, Ryota and the final member of Ryota's party dealt with the enemies coming from the front and sides.
Ranth's plan was great, except for one thing, he had assumed that the beasts that were charging him was the only thing that the men infront of them had planned, sadly for him it wasn't. Two arrows would come flying out of the trees and strike at both Ranth and Ryota. Neither of the arrows were particularly lethal shots, however both would hit. Ryota would be hit in the shoulder and Ranth would receive a nice wound to his stomach, painful but not lethal. This was if he stayed in place and simply waited, or he if was lucky enough to see the arrows he might be able to move in time, if he could move quick enough that is.
Using archers was a common tactic that bandits used to help pick off people in ambushes like this. If Ranth or Ryota didn't do anything about them, they would both be picked off one at time by the attacks. While that was going on the beasts would have reached Ryota, one of them would bite down on his leg while the other would try and hit him in the arm. The first beast would be slashed lightly, however Ryota was getting overwhelmed by the beasts. Ranth had made a mistake in thinking that just because Ryota was a higher class of adventurer meant that he could take the beasts all on his own especially after being attacked from the bushes.
From the back side there would be sounds of metal clashing against one another and the screams of battle could be heard. If Ranth turned around to look he would see that there was clearly five men there attacking the other three. Oddly enough the little girl hadn't done anything just yet, she was looking out at the group of men with a smile across her face. Ryota screamed out as the beasts bit down on his body. It was up to Ranth to do something.
As the beasts drew close and Ranth completed his incantation, Ranth saw an opportunity and he took it by shunpoing forwards, blade drawn and simultaneously activating the spell he'd prepared... causing him to vanish completely from view. The immediate result of this was that he inadvertently avoided the arrow that slammed into the side of the caravan a moment later. He streaked past the rampaging beasts in the blink of an eye and arrived in between the two soldiers who had been in charge of setting the beasts upon the convoy in the first place.
Still invisible and acting without hesitation, Ranth rammed his Zanpakuto into the first soldier's neck- giving him no chance to react due to the speed of the strike and the games own rules about surprise attacks essentially granting a free hit and thus a free kill. Unable to rest on the laurels of just one kill however, Ranth took advantage of the element of surprise to strike at the second soldier as well- driving the tip of his blade through the man's ear before he could even turn to see what fate had befallen his companion.
Breathing deeply not so much from exertion, but rather from the adrenaline that was now coursing through him, Ranth looked back at where he'd come from to see that Ryota was alone against the beasts whilst his so-called companion was doing nothing to assist. In addition, Ranth realised that Ryota had an arrow sticking out of his arm, bringing his attention to the men hidden amongst the trees for the first time and his mind reeled at the impossibility of the task before him.
There were at least 4 opponents- two archers and two beasts- plus the relative unknown of the young girl who was still sitting in the front seat of the wagon with a smile that chilled him to the core. He couldn't see what was happening at the rear of the convoy, but the sounds of battle were obvious. Gritting his teeth and knowing he didn't have time to waste, Ranth recast Bakudo #26 and made his way into the trees in search of the archers. He had to take them out first or he'd just be turned into a pin-cushion if he tried to help Ryota out in the open.
Well Ranth had been able to disappear and was able to get to close to the men that he was going to slash at, the attacks seemed to be successful. The attacks would have worked, yet Ranth would feel something very familiar for a moment. Time would start to move backwards and the men that he had killed would be alive once more. Ranth had been taken back to moments before he had been able to stab the first man.
This time however as he tried to stab at the first men Ranth would find it impossible to draw his blade. No matter how hard he would try to draw his blade he would find it impossible to pull out his sword. Then the sounds of the DM's voice would echo into his mind. “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh boy you fucked up normie can't use magic and attack in the same round.” Those words would be head loudly as Ranth had realized his fuck up.
At this time Ranth would hear the screams coming from Ryota, if he looked back he would see that the beasts were making short work of the adventurer. Ryota wouldn't last long if he was left alone, in rushing to try and deal with the two men in the front Ranth had abandoned Ryota and the rest of the party. The sounds of screams could be heard coming from the back as someone cried out for help.
By this time both men would realize that Ranth had vanished both of them knew that something was up. Both of them would be on high alert as they backed away from where they were standing and separated, once more two more arrows would be fired out aimed at Ryota, one would hit him while the other missed just slightly. All the while the little girl would be standing up laughing a bit while chanting something while the staff was aimed at the two men.
His attack thwarted by more unseen rules, Ranth had all of about 2 seconds to re-orientate himself after the time discombobulation and decide what to do next. He was still invisible, but the men were clearly on guard after having seem him disappear. At this point, the screams of Ryota's predicament reached a new level of shrillness and Ranth realised he now had two choices. Continue his assault on the two men, although now that they had spread out he. wouldn't be able to kill them both in quick succession.
Alternatively, he was now well positioned to get a sneak attack on the two beasts. If he did so, then he would allow Ryota to escape the firing line of the unseen archers and- hopefully- reinforce the rear of the caravan while Ranth took care of the archers, or vice versa. Over the sounds of Ryota's struggle, Ranth also noticed that the girl in red had stood up and her mouth was moving quickly whilst her gaze was directed through Ranth and towards the two soldiers.
Having no idea what she was up to, but seeing that she clearly had either no intention or no ability to assist her own comrade, Ranth's decision was ultimately made for him as he dashed back towards the dogs and then off to the side whereupon he incanted silently for not just one, but two byakurai from a position that gave him a perfect angle of attack on the beasts and also hid him from view from the archer's and the soldiers who were now wraily examining their surroundings.
Twin jets of light burst from his fingers, catching the dog that was attacking Ryota's leg through the side of the head like a hot knife through butter and the second jet of light caught the dog in the chest and tore through it with similar ease. The beasts remained for a full second after being hit before each one exploded into mist as whatever force sustained them expired.
Hoping that he'd done enough to save Ryota from further damage, Ranth ducked low and began moving through the trees as quietly as he could as he hunted for the Archer's positions. As he moved, he tentatively tried to cast his stealth technique again and found that the rules of the world didn't immediately come to a screeching halt and breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that if he stuck to one kind of action- physical or magical- he didn't break any rules. At least for now.
Ranth had made the right choice as he had left the position that he had been in. Suddenly the girl who had been quiet the entire time screamed out “EXPLOSION” Which followed a massive blast of energy that utterly destroyed both the men that were standing there and the archers along with a massive chunk of the forested area. All this happened as Ranth used his byakurai to kill the dogs. It seemed that if he had stayed in the same spot he would have been turned into ash by the attack of the mage.
Ryota slinked down and let out a sigh now that he was no longer being attacked. In his condition he wasn't going to be able to fight properly at all, sad, but he had taken too much damage, if only someone had stepped in to help him earlier then Ryota might have been able to help Ranth deal with the back intruders, who were still fighting Ryota's comrades and Cindy at this point. Ryota had a smile across his face, but he was obviously in pain from the fight.
Ranth would have the option to go back and see who was attacking. If he did he would see that the female with armor would have a lewd smile across her face as she was being attacked by the men. The rest of the group would be back simply supporting as Cindy held onto a dagger that she had and the blue haired female would be using her spells to heal the armored blonde. Ranth would count four men there all taking turns the female.
Ranth had never seen such sudden and expansive destruction quite like the aptly named 'explosion' that the girl in red created. Silently offering his thanks to whatever deity was watching over him and his actions to have allowed him from very narrowly becoming a statistic under the heading of collateral damage, Ranth made his way towards the far end of the convoy to see what kind of state the others were in.
As it turned out, what he saw- whilst incredibly strange- wasn't nearly as bad as he'd feared. The blonde girl with the heavy armor was taking on the four men who had approached from the rear and so far she seemed to be doing an excellent job of keeping them at bay whilst the girl with blue hair offered magical support and Cindy... well... she was there too.
Taking full advantage of the advantage provided to him by his stealth technique, Ranth approached the men from behind- their attention well and truly focused on the girl and the strange, embarrassing noises she made each time any of their weapons connected with her body. If he'd closed his eyes, the sounds she was making would not have given any indication that there was a life or death battle going on and if he hadn't been invisible, anyone could have seen that his cheeks were bright red from the implication of those improper noises.
Gathering his composure, Ranth positioned himself behind the man closest to the back of the group and neatly severed his head. If the other man noticed immediately, he couldn't see any sign of it as he'd timed his attack at the same time that one man finished his and another man began, which left one man who wasn't actively about to attack or recover from a recent attack. It was this man that Ranth went after next- plunging his blade through the man's back- severing his spine and then withdrawing his blade and kicking the man forwards.
By this stage, the other two men were aware of something being amiss but Ranth knew from hard earned experience that the universe was on his side in the form of the 'surprise attack rule' and he struck at the man who had most recently attacked by slicing low into his achiles heel before then bringing his weapon upwards to slash diagonally across the man's torso from his left hip to right shoulder.
