”Well, the individual powers of a Quincy are more like…”
Hadrian paused for a moment, looking for the words that would answer her question. Perhaps… It was probably easiest to just show her. His “bow” was hardly a bow anymore, after all. It would aptly demonstrate the difference. In a simple motion he raised his hand, pointing it a distant tree as if holding a gun. And then Ruhe would see it - and perhaps feel it if she had attuned her Energy Sensory. Hadrian’s unique signature suffused with the ambient power of the forest, weaving and folding in his hand to form a simple revolver. He pulled the trigger - and an arrow flew from the gun’s muzzle, striking the tree squarely in the centre. The kickback was much less sever than that of a normal gun - showing Ruhe that this was not a simple human contraption. It was a manifestation of Hadrian’s power, the form of his will to fight.
”In time you’ll find the shape and form of your power. Quite soon, I’ll imagine. You’ve made a lot more progress than I did in the same amount of time.”
Hadrian turned to her - allowing his gun to dematerialise - and smiled at his own self-deprecation. He was pleased with his progress, sure, but Ruhe would be able to tell from his posture and his tone that he lacked the same self-sure arrogance that Amalia had. Even the nicer Quincy of the Vandenreich had more confidence in their abilities than Hadrian. But where Hadrian lacked confidence, he made up for it with his conviction in his beliefs. That was the reason he had been selected to lead. Those who served under Hadrian did not do so out of fear or respect of his power, but for the same love for the Empire that he possessed. That was what drove them beyond their limits, what allowed them to fight for the world of peace they all desired…
”She told me that Shinigami are evil and that all they are interested in is exterminating our race. I want to know if they are truly evil? I’ve never met one and I don’t judge anyone or anything until meeting it face to face. Would you mind giving me your insight on that Sir Hadrian?”
”Just call me John, miss Krieger. There’s no need for such formalities…”
The pleasantry was just a mask for the disgust he felt though. From what he had gathered, Amalia had only recently met Ruhe - and yet she had already begun to sow the seeds of hatred in her heart. “Shinigami are evil”? If that was true, every race was evil - anyone who fought for what they believed in was evil. No-one was evil unless what they fought for was inherently evil. The Shinigami fought to protect their balance, a relatively noble goal. They just didn’t understand that the “balance” they tried to maintain was tearing the worlds apart at the seams. Was there a need for such a painful cycle of life and death? The Shinigami and the Vandenreich were opposed, true. But Hadrian would never stoop to calling them evil. It was far too simplistic. But then, Amalia’s desires were as simple as the picture she painted.
”That, miss Krieger… Is a question you may need to answer yourself some day. But I wouldn’t pay any heed to miss Vollbrecht’s words - not yet. You cannot label a race like the Shinigami evil simply because of the fact that you oppose them. Yes, there have been atrocities - committed both by us and against us, but my belief is that we need to move beyond that hate. If you want to remember only one bit of advice from me, miss, it’s this:
Please, don’t allow yourself to get caught up in this cycle of hate. Only by removing yourself from it can we work to end it.”
