There had been a bit of underestimation on the part of both Kuroi and Ryu. Consider, first, Itto Kaso. A 3000 reiatsu strength blade of pure heat and destructive power. Something whose purpose was to reduce its maker to ashes. A Kido favored by more than one Captain Commander as a substitute for Ryuujin Jakka, whose release slogan was literally, "reduce all of creation to smoldering ashes." Needless to say, Itto Kaso was hot. And not just a little hot. A lottle hot. A lot. Of. Heat. That was why Sozen was, admittedly, somewhat surprised by their response to it. Not even he could have anticipated it.
Kuroi stood there and took it, presumably thinking that Ryu would bail him out. And Ryu? He moved to the center of it, after allowing himself to be stuck on the outskirts of it for a couple of seconds. He literally stood in it, then moved farther into it, and then cast a spell which absorbed it. Sozen was definitely impressed to see out of the corner of his eye a blade resembling Ryuujin Jakka brought to life, and could even feel his own body starting to sweat just by the mere thought of being touched by such a thing. But the very property (besides reiatsu strength) that made the blade so dangerous was what would start part 1 of the demise and defeat of Ryu and Kuroi.
Consider the sun. That too is very hot, and if you could snuff out even the corona, of 6000 degrees K, it would be impressive. But consider the type of burns one gets from the sun after a few hours, millions of miles away from it. And then consider the burns one gets from fire after a few seconds. And envision sitting on the sun, now, for a few seconds. Consider, therefore, what might happen from bathing in Itto Kaso for just a few seconds before it was absorbed. Ryu and Kuroi weren't coming out pretty. Ryu may have absorbed Itto Kaso, but the fact remained that he had allowed himself to bathe in it for a few seconds before turning it into a sword.
That sword, which caused burns to his arm and hurt him to create, wasn't the only wound he received. Because by bathing in those flames, even with his Hierro of 1600, he was going to be unimaginably blackened by the heat and power of Itto Kaso. Only one man had ever directly tanked an Itto Kaso of superior spiritual strength to his own and come out relatively unburned. That man was Azeru Cho. Ryu and Kuroi were nowhere near that powerful, even if by all standards and accounts, they were powerful. What would be left as Itto Kaso faded wasn't just light burns or being unharmed... It was intense heat damage.
Their skin would literally be charred to practically black just from that few second exposure. The heat around their bodies was so intense that it would superheat the fluid in their eyes, causing them to burst into flames and be obliterated. Effectively, two blinded Espada. They would literally have their eyes destroyed and their bodies blackened by allowing themselves to bathe in Itto Kaso for even that few seconds Ryu had allowed. Had they been able to guard instantly, then they would have been a little bit more okay. Just a few brief burns. But, as it was, they were blackened. Kuroi, sure, had high speed regeneration. It wouldn't be two minutes before he patched up. Ryu was in a bit more trouble.
But, that really wasn't the crux of Sozen's attack. It had all been a ploy, and the Kuchiki Head had known from past experiences battling Kuroi, who had tanked his Destructive Hana: Dizorobu, a huge fire spell, that mere fire spells weren't enough for Espada of this level. Of course not. Last time, it had taken Sozen's everything just to try to fight Kuroi. And Sozen was now fighting without release. Even now, he could detect the black armored figure hulking somewhere in his peripheral vision, breathing heavy, waiting for Sozen to dare to try and release again, so that it could attack him again. He felt that pressure. But not quite enough.
Not quite enough to stop him. Introducing Secret Destructive Hana #44: Mona. For a reiatsu cost, Sozen could coat an extension of himself in a virulent toxin. Upon the Itto Kaso erupting into life and Kuroi and Ryu just tanking it, Sozen activated his spell to release it into his flames themselves, so that the burns taken from it would literally touch upon both Ryu and Kuroi and sink this toxin into their bodies. Ryu was already burned and without eyes, and Kuroi, though healing from high speed regeneration, couldn't heal from the toxin being put inside of him. But, what did this toxin do to them, exactly?
Well, it was fatal. But not short term fatal. It wasn't all that powerful, really. It would take a very, very long time to be fatal, and the fatality wouldn't be directly from the effect of the toxin itself. No, instead, it started as pain, as if they were still burning, and on fire. That was the first. Just them burning. And on fire. That feeling throughout their entire bodies. There would be more to come from that toxin in due time, but first, it would become Sozen Kuchiki's attack on Kuroi and Ryu. In the meantime, Sozen also coated his sword in the spell as it cut across Kuroi's chest, just in case, and double embedded it into Kuroi. Double the pain. Double the later effects too.
In one attack, Sozen had literally burned Ryu and Kuroi out, and poisoned them. And they had just allowed it to happen. There would be no guarding from a toxin that was from such a powerful user, after having already allowed the user's attack to hit. Even if the Itto Kaso hadn't blackened them, just the minor burns would have been enough, as it got under the skin, and got that toxin into their bodies. It also was a technique Sozen had yet to use against anyone, though he'd possessed it for a while. It meant that neither could possibly expect or anticipate it. And the worst of the effects were yet to come.
Stop music!
Now, Sozen noted something else. Ryu appeared near him, with damn good accuracy for someone blinded, and was slashing with that Itto Kaso blade. Kuroi, in the meantime, was running away. All else failed, Sozen's attack would be stopped by his arm being severed. He saw it in his peripherals. It was fast. A very fast move, and it would be extremely difficult to defend. He had something in mind at the last second, but wasn't sure it would work. More than likely, Raion might need to bail him out. ...Or Kuroi's Bala, which suddenly took out the Itto Kaso sword and stopped it, allowing Sozen's strike to land on Kuroi and further poison him.
But why? Sozen's analytical mind didn't take long to figure it out. Sake forming everywhere. A sword of literal flames. Alright, flammable explosion room. Had that happened, Ryu would instantly have been killed, and Kuroi might have been in danger of that too. Sozen would also have been in considerable danger. Luckily, that blade had been taken out. Besides, Ryu and Kuroi were already heavily burned, plus poisoned. Sozen didn't mind that a possible end shot had been stopped. He didn't feel as if they needed to be greedy. Instead, he saw something else. Ryu's arm swiping mid air, Kuroi escaping to behind the tile to attack Raion, and the Bala starting to glow.
It didn't take a genius of high battle analysis to figure out that a Bala starting to glow like that and expand its energy indicated it was going to do something wild. The most predictable option, judging by how Kuroi had jumped basically behind cover (also a good feat considering blindness, though by then his eyes had likely begun to regenerate) and the Bala's expansion? Explosion. If it detonated, as Sozen suspected, then it would be even more powerful than Raion's attack. The difference was it wasn't an instant kill on Ryu, which was why it was superior. Only one thing to do in this situation.
I AM THE HOKAGE!
Whoosh! Gone. Flash step. Lucky moment was that as Ryu wouldn't have had time to cast another spell while in a slashing motion toward Sozen since he had not anticipated his blade being consumed by the Bala, as it was impossible for anyone to make such a leap of faith. Plus, the Bala would've been in the way, and the slash would have concluded by the time it wasn't. As it started glowing and Kuroi was attacking Raion, Sozen disappeared using his fastest flash step power imaginable. Raion was way too heavy for him to help out, but that didn't mean that Sozen couldn't do it.
Passing by on the way, Sozen activted Gouzen Demizu instantly upon Raion, just narrowly missing Kuroi. It created a wall of water between Kuroi and Raion, and would also sweep away Raion, washing him toward Sozen's own destination. Where was Sozen's destination? Kind of funny to think about, actually. The first room. Remember how Sozen and Raion had come in to this room from a different one earlier? Well, how do you tell the difference between one room and the next? The divider between them. The door. There was a door. And Sozen blasted through it with his flash step, and his flood would wash Raion through it as Sozen passed him.
There was no one in that room anywhere near Sozen's speed. They couldn't stop him. And, save Kuroi, no one had Sozen's analytic ability plus instinct. He would be the first to realize this counter and use it. Only Kuroi could realize on time what Sozen was doing, but he couldn't keep up in terms of speed. Sozen would take himself and Raion through the door, and close it immediately using an arm movement from Shunpo Karin. Too fast. Too instant. Sozen was that good. As soon as the doors were closed, as if they were the cue, that Bala exploded. Before Kuroi and Ryu could even realize and process how Sozen had escaped, the Bala would explode.
Instantly, reiatsu too powerful for either of them to defend would flood that room. Sozen had taken the only real exit, and the other two were trapped otherwise and had to get out. It was so instant, though. Could they do it? Sozen expected that they could and would, but he hadn't expected them to be too hurt anyway, though admittedly the pain from hsi toxin might derail their focus and slow their minds. They were already severely damaged from earlier too. Either way, that whole palace was immune to spiritual power, even Kuroi's. Those doors were enough to block the Bala's explosion, and sealed it into the room, containing it.
As all of this ended, Sozen would be left with Raion, who was now a wet lion. Sozen was panting, because he had just performed a lot of spells in a matter of seconds. He was pretty tired, now. But, at least, the fight was going in their favor now. And, with all the combat experience he had built up, Sozen had a large reservoire of stamina. Just enough to see himself and Raion through whatever was left of this fight. Panting, and with a smile on his face, Sozen waited to see how the fight would continue. By all accounts, it might be over. It might be at this point that Kuroi and Ryu decided to retreat rather than attack further. Their call.
