He watched as Rin seemed to collect herself and replan her method of attack. It took her a moment, and Kaen could easily have taken to the offensive. But he gave her the chance to plan and adapt. This was a test for her. And a chance for Kaen to show off a little. After that lecture, he expected that she'd try to maximize the use of her Nodachi's length, to keep him outside of arms reach. Of course, Kaen possessed a sword of his own. Should he use it yet? A nodachi's length certainly made it a more troublesome weapon for him to combat, compared to a standard length katana. True, it made it more useless once he got into close quarters, but that generally wasn't a problem for Kaen anyways. He noted her use of the sheath in tandem with the sword, but also realized that her physical strength was not great enough to inflict any real damage with it. The shift of her hand to the back of the hilt was not missed by Kaen. Adding a bit more reach, huh? He thought as he saw Rin charge at him.
Unsurprisingly, she braked a considerable distance from Kaen, slashing at him with her sword. A diagonal slash? Diagonal cuts were annoying, Kaen had found. Evading them was easy, actually closing in on them was difficult when up against a sword that long. If it were a katana, Kaen could have simply intercepted her attack at the wrist. The Nodachi's length made that more difficult. However, because Rin was keeping such distance, evading the attack was simple enough. Kaen performed a quick double step to evade the cut, noticing as it shifted from a diagonal slash into a vertical one. "Impressive sword work." Kaen commented, but said nothing further. He was hardly an expert on swordsmanship, and so could not comment beyond that. The nodachi's length certainly would be troublesome. True, if he went to his maximum speed, he would close the distance in an instant. And he would do that in time. For now though, he would continue to pressure his subordinate.
Kaen reached up to his back and drew his Kodachi from it, bringing it in front of him. Now what shall you do? He thought. Kaen's own swordsmanship was not as polished as Rin's. But it was serviceable, and he understood the basics. He stepped back towards her, bringing his Kodachi crashing into the side of Rin's weapon, deflecting her sword aside with the back of his blade. The intent of this was simply to create an opening in her guard that he could exploit, sweeping in past the apex of her blade with a sudden burst of speed, and a powerful reverse punch to her solarplexis. This technique was practically the staple of Karate-- a solid body blow that could wind an opponent if it connected.
Well. That was assuming they were of comparable strength. With Rin, it'd likely do that, along with send the fourth seat flying. However, her bones would remain undamaged. Kaen was still holding back. Enough so that he wouldn't kill her or seriously injure her. But it'd certainly hurt, and probably briefly incapacitate her. Not knock her out, however, unless her tolerance for pain was far lower than Kaen had given her credit for. But he doubted that was the case here. He was, of course, prepared to deal with a potential counterattack if Rin brought one to bear.
