Androgynous Asian would probably be the best two-word phrase to describe Kamikawa Hibiki. His face fits this bill especially well. Overall, there is just enough fat on his face that the sharply masculine lines of his face are smoothed out, but not so much that his face appears to be heavy-set. Hibiki has undergone a treatment that prevents him from growing facial hair, so he is never burdened by stubble. His neck is longer than average which gives him a certain elegancy of appearance. The ears on Hibiki are slightly smaller than normal, which slightly adds to his gender-neutral appearance. A lightweight pair of silver-framed sunglasses with purple lenses rest on his ears and the bridge of his nose, hiding his almond eyes.
Hibiki’s hair is one of the more noteworthy aspects of his facial appearance. The shaggy golden mane on his head is slightly more masculine than the rest of his face, but could still be mistaken for a modern woman’s haircut from behind. The back of his hair is relatively straight and hangs down to the midpoint of his neck. The front and sides are characterized by a series of slender blonde spikes which help to toughen up his look slightly. His bangs are equally jagged, with the center and side portions hanging down between his brown orbs. The bangs over each eye are trimmed just enough that they will never run the risk of hitting his eye, but they still do a nice job of hiding his brows.
Below the neckline, the androgyny fades away into masculinity. Hibiki’s body is a firm, shapely mass of muscles, but he does not have the bulky appearance that many muscular men achieve. Standing at five feet eleven inches tall and weighing only 160 pounds, he is far from intimidating in the eyes of most soldiers. There is virtually no fat on his body, but his muscles are not perfectly defined. His shoulders, back, and chest are all flat rather than bulging with muscle. The muscles in his abdominal region are clearly visible, but not to the degree that you would call them a six-pack. They more resemble what you would expect to see on an athletic woman than a male soldier. His legs are clearly not flabby, but they are not rock-solid either.
His tan skin is smoother than one would expect of a fighter, and it often even has a bit of a radiant glow to it. No doubt this is from some kind of product. Men are not simply born with the smooth, light brown skin that Hibiki appears to be blessed with. On top of his skin, the outfit he wears changes on a daily basis. The outfit he is wearing tends to determine the overall androgyny of his appearance. Some of his outfits clearly mark him as a man, while others hide his form well enough that it becomes nearly impossible to tell what gender he is. There are a few normal outfits that he will wear repeatedly, but he is known to occasionally wear an outfit only once before donating it. The only time you can ever accurately predict Hibiki’s outfit is if he is being deployed to a battlefield or a vice-captain’s meeting. For these situations, Hibiki will always change into a traditional Shihakusho if he has the time.
His Shihakusho is generally the same as that of other Shinigami, but there are a few noteworthy differences. A normal Shihakusho is just a plain black cloth outfit with an inner lining of white and a simple white sash. A nicer than average one will usually have separate layers of white and black cloth, possibly with a colored sash, but will still be quite simple overall. Hibiki’s Shihakusho has a subtle yet stylish pattern woven into both the black and white layers of cloth. There are vertical bands roughly an inch wide that alternate back and forth. The bands are diagonal stripes at a roughly 30 degree angle, and the way the bands come together make it look as if his Shihakusho is made of a series of arrows. Depending on the way you look at them, they can appear to either be moving up or down. While the pattern is rather hard to notice to an untrained eye, his Shihakusho still appears to be of high quality to even the most thick-headed ruffians.
Beyond the fabric, there are two noteworthy differences between Hibiki’s Shihakusho and that of others. His sash is a light golden silk that matches his hair perfectly, and a vice-captain’s badge is tied to his left bicep with a smaller length of golden silk. While wearing this outfit, it can be relatively easy to mistake Hibiki for a woman. The Shiahakusho covers most of his body in a way that it appears to hide curves that are not actually there. His little bit of exposed skin is smooth enough, and his hair is long enough, that he looks impressively feminine in this outfit.
On a lazy day, when Hibiki hasn’t done laundry or just wakes up late, he may sink as far as to don jeans and a t-shirt. His jeans are no Levi’s, but rather are of his own design. They have been washed in so much acid that their original light blue tone has faded to the point it is nearly white. Tears and holes mark the front section of the left thigh and right knee respectively. The stitching is relatively straightforward, but the back pockets are embroidered with a simple “U” design. The t-shirt’s design varies as often as the day, but they are usually sporting a brightly colored abstract pattern. The shirt and jeans are fitted to hug Hibiki’s body closely, so there is little doubt that he is male when dressed like this.
On days when Hibiki has enough time to get ready in the morning (this is no less than an hour), he will most likely be dressed in a suit that would make Al Capone proud. This outfit almost universally has a crisply starched and pressed white dress shirt worn over the top of a white tank top. A bright tie, usually red, yellow, or light blue stands as the focal point of the ensemble. The tie is tucked into a perfectly tailored suit. Hibiki has a large collection of suits, so the pattern and color vary, but he tends to prefer either black with a pinstripe or a gray glenplaid design. Typically he will just wear a pair of black loafers with an outfit like this. When Hibiki is dressed in this fashion it is immediately apparent that he is a man. No woman could ever hope to pull off such a classic masculine image.
Because of his fashion sense, Hibiki tends to stick out like a sore thumb in Soul Society. Whether it is the bright yellow sash of his Shihakusho, the eccentric designs of a shirt, or the horribly out-of-place suits, he is always the odd ball out among Shinigami. In the world of the living, he is often not much better off. His casual looks can blend in decently well, but he always looks far too young to be wearing such well-tailored suits. The looks he gets while in a suited gigai are often a mix of confusion and awe. Some think that he must have inherited the suit, but others notice the confidence he radiates. Those who notice this confidence correctly surmise that the clothes make the man, and Hibiki is always wearing some damn nice clothes.]

Dislikes: [
1. Disloyalty – Those who betray their comrades are worse than scum. All souls have a duty to be faithful to those they hold dear. Since Hibiki’s release works best with teammates, he is especially discouraged by a lack of loyalty.
2. Paperwork – It’s generally seen as a waste of time by Hibiki. No one will care what happened 100 years down the road, so why bother recording it. This is attitude is largely derived from his dislike of history.
3. History – The previous logic is largely biased by the fact that Hibiki hates history. It’s always been his worst subject in both the world of the living and the academy. He could never motivate himself to memorize all the names and dates of events.
4. Liquor – Alcoholic abusive father happened. See chapter 1 of history.
5. Bondage – This is the act of willingly abandoning one’s power. By being tied up, you lose all control over a situation. Not only is this utterly stupid, but it simply baffles Hibiki as to how people could enjoy this.
6. His biological father – For the same reasons as #4.
7. Bureaucracy – These agencies exist solely to create more paperwork and waste his time. Paperwork is a waste of time, and the organizations that mandate them are a bigger waste of time… Gotei 13 excluded of course… *nervous laughter*
8. Quincy – One of the only things that Hibiki took away from his history classes in the Academy was that Quincy destroy the balance of souls. While Hibiki doesn’t fully understand their motivation, he knows that what they are doing is wrong. Hibiki is far more likely to lose his cool when fighting a Quincy.
9. Overly affectionate people – Flirting is one thing, but people who are either too free in giving out their love, or couples that openly use PDAs bug Hibiki. Romance should be saved for in private.
10. Lateness and Earliness – Being right on time is something Hibiki prides himself on. Those who are late or early are not using their time efficiently.
11. Techno/Rap/Hip-Hop/Modern Pop – This music takes virtually no skill to design, and sounds dreadful. Hibiki fears what type of music the next generation will create.
12. Rave Haretsu – Hibiki will never understand how Rave can tolerate that awful music, or how he can spend so many hours playing video games. A real man would be spending that time training or at least listening to Frank Sinatra.
13. Modern America – As far as Hibiki can tell, America has gone to hell. Its music has become terrible, its economy is unstable, and the politicians are all corrupt. Hibiki longs for the glory days of America where the American Dream wasn’t just a dream.
14. Arrogance – There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. People who cross the line into arrogance ought to have something to back it up with, or they will learn to regret it quite quickly.]
Likes: [
1. Women and Men – Hibiki is bisexual, but is very shy in admitting this. He prefers a relatively slim frame, and beyond that doesn’t tend to care about the details. To him, it’s more about the personality and way that people carry themselves. There is nothing sexier to Hibiki than confidence.
2. Flirting – Hibiki is a complete flirt with women. He’s generally a pretty smooth talker, but still tends to come off as a gentleman. He will occasionally flirt with a man, but it is far less common.
3. Cigarettes – Even after death, Hibiki still hasn’t managed to kick this bad habit. Camel 99’s are his preferred brand, and he makes sure to spend plenty of money on them when he goes to the human world.
4. Fashion – Hibiki has had a passion for fashion since his time as a model in the world of the living. He ran his own boutique in Rukongai prior to becoming a Shinigami, and his zanpakuto is based on clothing designs.
5. Swing Dancing – It’s a good workout, incredibly romantic, and you get to hear some of the best music ever composed. What isn’t to like about it?
6. Human World – With the exception of what America has become, Hibiki enjoys the human world. He does his best to land assignments outside of soul society, but after his transfer to the 4th division this is far less common than it used to be.
7. Martial Arts – Hibiki has studied Karate extensively, and enjoys sparring quite a bit. Karate was in high school, and has stuck with him since. He’s picked up taekwondo since dying, and will enjoy a friendly spar with a friend. That being said, he is far from the best martial artist, but he can hold his own.
8. Rigid Military Structure – Most people like autonomy and making some amount of decisions. Hibiki much prefers to just have orders handed down from the top brass. It’s far easier to just go execute an order correctly than it is to issue that order in the first place.
9. Punctuality – Hibiki is always on time. Always. If he is a minute late or early, the apology will be so long and drawn out that you will want to punch him.
10. Efficiency – Time is valuable to Hibiki, and he prefers that it is used well. This extends beyond just time though. Hibiki is efficient in his fighting style, as well as his clothing design.
11. Hollows/Arrancar – While Hibiki understands that the whole consuming souls part is bad, he also knows that he would probably be out of a job without these guys. They also tend to be good opponents. Some of them aren’t even completely evil, and he entertains the possibility of becoming friendly with Arrancar that aren’t out to kill shinigami.
12. Jazz – This musical form is so infinitely complex. The way that the melodies intertwine and the ability of the musicians to improvise off of each other is better than sex for Hibiki.
13. Frank Sinatra – Frank is by far the best musician to ever grace the Earth’s surface. It is a personal goal of Hibiki’s to track down Mr. Sinatra in the soul society and learn from him.
14. Classical Music – While not as good as Jazz, Classical Music is ridiculously complex. One cannot help but to stop in awe before the might of Beethoven’s Fifth, a Sonata from Brahms, or a Piano Concerto by Rachmaninoff.
15. Botan Kuromori – First and foremost, the fact that Botan is gay is an obvious plus in Hibiki’s book. He seems to be one of the best rounded captains as far as Hibiki can tell. While it’s sad that this is a rare thing, the fact that Botan doesn’t come off as eccentric is more than Hibiki can say about most captains.
16. Bokuga Sayuri – This is more of a respect than an actual liking. Hibiki can only imagine what goes on in Bokuga’s mind, but he knows he never wants to be on the bad side of this man. While Bokuga definitely qualifies as eccentric in Hibiki’s book, most scientific types are either eccentric or cold, and Hibiki prefers his scientists to be interesting.]
Flaws: [
1. Vain – Hibiki is relatively good looking and knows it. He’s also a competent fighter, and is not afraid to put his skills to the test. His confidence is generally able to be backed up by reality, but his attitude can still border on vanity.
2. Jealousy – Hibiki is yet to have a very long-lasting relationship. He tends to be jealous of those who appear to have found true love.
3. Daddy Issues – See the history. Tl;dr: Alcoholic dad beat him. He tends to have an issue with anything vaguely related to his biological father.
4. High Expectations – If you have a job to do, then you do it perfectly. Failure is not acceptable under any circumstances, and those who fail will rapidly fall out of Hibiki’s favor.
5. Gossip – Hibiki has made sure that his social network stays active since becoming a Shinigami. He knows all the latest gossip about most anyone in Seireitei, and has a bad habit of sharing that information with anyone who asks… and those who don’t ask as well.
6. Flirts too much – Possibly because Hibiki’s life is devoid of a long-term romantic interest, he tends to hit on almost anything that moves. Most people at least look for signs that someone might be taken before making a move, but Hibiki just makes sure they are conscious.
7. Sucks at Zanjutsu – Hibiki makes up for his poor swordsmanship with Kido, but a shinigami should be far better at Zanjutsu than Hibiki is.
8. Self-righteous – Hibiki is damn sure that his sense of morality is the correct one. People who disagree with him on moral issues are wrong, end of story.
9. Theatrical – Drama is something Hibiki would have been great at in another life. He does not create drama unnecessarily, but his gestures and tone of voice can make people uncomfortable if he gets too excited about something.]
Habits: [
1. Playing with his hair – Hibiki will often wrap a few strands of hair around his finger. This mostly comes out when he is nervous, thinking, or ashamed.
2. Berating others for drinking – Alcohol is a great way to ruin your life. Hibiki has no problem telling people that, and is known to start fights in order to stop people from drinking.
3. Training – While Hibiki has since abandoned the child-like notion of being an “ally of justice” the feeling that he gets after a good workout is just sublime. Nothing, not even sex, can replace the high you get after a good workout. He makes it a habit to work out and practices his kata daily.
4. Designing new outfits – Hibiki picked up quite a bit of knowledge during his short time in the fashion industry. He’s especially fond of the fashion from when he was alive, and tries to find ways to combine that style with the fashions of Soul Society.]
Fears: [
1. Commitment – Hibiki spends a decent chunk of his time flirting with people. Giving that up for monogamy would be rough. He’s also never spent any extended amount of time in a relationship, and it’s possible he never will. The idea of opening up so much to one person, and spending so much time with only a single person just flat out scares him.
2. Becoming his father – There are at least a few paragraphs devoted to this in his history. The desire to prove he was not his father was what motivated Hibiki to not drink, take up martial arts, and join the army. This is by far his biggest fear.
3. Loss of Control - Hibiki prefers to be in control of the immediate situation around him. Being on the receiving end of bondage, restraining bakudo, and fighting someone far stronger than him are not things he looks forward to. He doesn’t mind following orders though.
4. Watching his allies die – Hibiki has had a few moments in his Shinigami career that still haunt him from time to time. Seeing the look on the face of a dying man is something that no member of squad four ever looks forward to.]
Goals: [
1. Learning healing kido strong enough to revive the recently killed – Hibiki cannot stand when he is too weak and inexperienced to save someone. Perhaps, somewhere, there is a technique that will allow him to save those that have already died in the afterlife?
2. Tracking down Frank Sinatra – There is no way that Mr. Sinatra turned into a hollow, and Hibiki refuses to believe that a hollow got to him before a Shinigami did. While Hibiki is not an aspiring musician, attempting to learn from Mr. Sinatra is an experience that Hibiki would actively kill for.
3. Befriend an Arrancar – Hibiki firmly believes that lines between good and evil are not as black and white as people believe. He seeks to find a good arrancar and befriend them to prove this point.]
Alignment: [Chaotic Good]
Overall Personality: [
The first impression one will probably get of Hibiki is that of classic 1920s gentleman. Hibiki is always dressed sharply, generally courteous, and is fiercely loyal to those he cares about. He is almost always on time, and puts his responsibilities to others ahead of his own needs. It isn’t entirely uncommon to notice him humming along to a Sinatra classic as he walks down the street. His attention to detail is obvious in everything he does. Be it during a fight or the process of designing an outfit, the details are essential. This focus on the details is strong enough that Hibiki will occasionally lose sight of the big picture.
If you run into Hibiki outside of his room then chances are he’s flirting with someone. In the evenings, the most likely place for you to find Hibiki is at one of a few watering holes in Rukongai. He generally prefers a nice restaurant to a bar, but will occasionally show up at the latter. While at one of these establishments, Hibiki’s time is primarily spent flirting with someone, but he usually remembers to grab a bite to eat. His style is generally to use chivalry, and treat people like they actually matter. He’s found that this is generally the easiest way to get someone in bed with him. For some odd reason, this progression of events from gentlemanly suitor to one-night stand perpetrator has had a tendency to keep Hibiki a single man.
When he isn’t busy trying to hook up with someone, Hibiki is probably either working on a new design or brushing up on his fighting skills. If the shinigami gig hadn’t panned out for Hibiki, he would definitely still be running his fashion boutique in Rukongai. The fashion world first called out to Hibiki when he got a job as a male model, and he has continued to pursue this since his passing into the afterlife. Fashion is always a possible topic of conversation with Hibiki, but his opinions on the topic can be rather strong. If he disagrees with you about what looks good, you will know immediately.
Between his flirty nature, appearance, and fashion sense, Hibiki tends to think of himself as a catch. He can come off as rather vain if his looks come in up in conversation. While he appreciates compliments, giving them out might not be the best idea. Diagnosing Hibiki with narcissistic personality disorder would probably be the first thing any psychologist would do after talking to him for five minutes. It isn’t unheard of for him to run late to an appointment because he spent too long starting at himself after getting dressed. Typically, he’ll apologize earnestly if he’s late, but in these cases the apology tends to derail into him complimenting himself far too much.
Hibiki’s self-appreciation isn’t the only time he can be overly theatrical. If you get him excited about something then his gestures tend to become rather exaggerated. His tone of voice when excited has a certain energy about it that generally keeps others listening. Conversely, he tends to be a good listener when he isn’t overtaken by excitement. Hibiki is genuinely interested in his fellow shinigami’s wellbeing, and he understands that emotional wellbeing is a key part of mental health. While some healers only cater to the body, Hibiki does his utmost to cater to the body, mind, and spirit. Sometimes a simple, “How are you today?” asked with genuine interest can do more for a person than the most powerful healing kido.
Unlike many shinigami, Hibiki doesn’t care about the victor of a battle. What matters more to him is that all his allies survive. Some would see his stance as cowardice, and some might even go as far as to call it treason, but those people matter little to Hibiki. The ones that mean the most are his comrades in battle, and if he prioritizes their lives over the mission, then the consequences can go right ahead and be damned. This type of attitude tends to get people in trouble, but Hibiki has managed to find this idea is far more acceptable in the fourth division.
Flattery is one thing that people notice comes from Hibiki with an almost alarming frequency. If he likes something about you, especially if it’s how you’ve dressed, then you will know right away. If Hibiki can’t find anything he likes about you, he might just make something up if you look like you’re having a bad day. Generally, Hibiki will openly discuss whatever is on his mind. This can be positive when he thinks highly of someone, but can also make him into a bit of an asshole at times. While Hibiki is often sincere, white lies are definitely within his repertoire. In most circumstances he will tell the truth, but if the truth would be painful, and serve no great purpose, then a white lie is called for in Hibiki’s eyes.
Large crowds of people are a home away from home for Hibiki. Whether it’s a busy training ground or a crowded bar, he tends to be right at home with other people. The bar, however, tends to trigger problems. Hibiki has serious problems with alcohol, and with the idea that it is so commonly accepted despite being so dangerous. His father was a raging alcoholic and an angry drunk. To put it bluntly, Hibiki was beaten as a child, and he blames this entirely on the alcohol that had consumed his father. Because of this experience growing up, he tends to have an issue with drinking and anyone who partakes of alcohol for no good reason. To Hibiki, alcohol is just a pathetic attempt at trying to use a drug to become something that one is not. Despite this, he is more than willing to frequent bars, but he tends to look down upon the majority of patrons there. Hibiki is a strong supporter of legislation that would outlaw alcohol in both Seireitei and the world of the living.]
