“My power is ‘Apathy.’ Nothing you do has any power now,” said Azazel as Shade’s zanpakutou slammed against Azazel’s midsection fruitlessly, “You are neutral! Your power is neutral. Your soul is neutral. You can’t cause harm. Nothing you create has the power to cause harm. You have lost your potential to attack. Your potential for damage. Any abilities that could “damage” have been neutralized. In your release. In your sword. Even without being dull, your sword cannot cut. Even released, your sword can do nothing to me!” Shade released the string and staggered back, making a mental note of what this meant. Did this mean that he himself could not cause harm, or was this effect just limited to Azazel? How long did it last? Would he need to resort to using weapons that weren’t linked to his soul like his zanpakutou? Luckily for Shade, he had a plethora of weapons that, while weaker than Buraindo Kira, still possessed the capability to cause harm to Azazel. It would be very convenient for Shade that Azazel now counted him out of the equation.
Azazel escaped from Shade’s trap using a Seele Shneider, slicing through the string that had wrapped itself around the quincy’s body. Shade gritted his teeth and braced himself with the fragment of the platform that had saved his life so many times before. Azazel left and sped towards Sozen, but was met by the Kuchiki captain at such close range. Shade didn’t think it was possible to get close to Azazel without being blasted by a barrage of arrows, but Sozen had done it. Was this it? Was the fight over? For good measure, Shade used a shunpo to get directly behind Sozen, taking advantage of the other captain like a shield. Immediately, Azazel was hit by a burst of flames that shot through multiple walls before he was able to fire off any arrows, and the ones that were fired were quickly disintegrated by Sozen’s super hot flames.
However, just as soon as Sozen unleashed the impressive technique, Azazel resorted to something Shade had hoped he wouldn’t have to deal with. The captain was well aware of the quincy’s final holy form and of the power that it possessed. Shade took a step backwards as a dimensional door opened in the room. Out of it stepped a number of quincy possessing the same rank as Azazel. Shade didn’t need to be smart to realize that they were both hopelessly outmatched. However there was one figure that caught Shade’s eye in particular. Zieg Revolver had returned from Soul Society with the enemy dressed in their garb. It didn’t take very long for Shade to come to the conclusion that Sozen had. “You insect...” he spat, “Couldn’t be a decent shinigami, so you decide to go turncoat? I will ensure your death is neither quick nor painless...”
Shade’s attention was quickly caught by Azazel as he took a step forwards and disappeared in a flash of blinding speed. It wasn’t Hirenkyaku. It was just pure, blinding speed. In an instant he appeared in front of Sozen and attempted to cleave him in two with his claymore. The captain’s eyes widened as Azazel suddenly appeared between him and his brother who had arrived with the rest of the quincy. There was no way to directly deal with the threat. They could only run. Putting distance between yourself and a quincy wasn’t usually a good idea, but there was no way Shade could fight Azazel up close. Not with his zanpakutou nullified. Shade immediately disappeared with another shunpo and left the room, hoping Kenryoku would follow. There was no fighting this quincy. They needed to leave now! Shade would be gone as soon as Azazel attacked Sozen, hoping that the other captain could emerge unscathed without his help. This would result in the quincy unable to follow his original plan in getting close to both Kenryoku and Shade. If he still fired arrows at the captain, he was at such a distance that he’d be able to react in time to avoid them.
Out of the three shinigami, Shade possessed the highest ability to sense energy, and what he sensed sent chills down his spine. Something of this immense power was gunning to kill him, and there was nothing he could do about it. If only he could use bankai, then maybe things would be different. Regardless, Shade stood far out of the lava-filled room on the defensive with his eyes shifting, as his mind raced. Was the daughter still the highest priority? Or did survival take precedence? He, Kenryoku, and Sozen would be invaluable assets to Soul Society if the Vandenreich did invade. He couldn’t imagine Seireitei being down two captains before an invasion of such proportions.
Shade opened his hand, and suddenly, the sword that was still embedded in the wall flew out at immense speeds back at its owner. However, the path it took was not was not a straight one. Behind Zieg, the blade would fly down and sever his right arm as it sped back to its destination. Shade had left the sword embedded there for that very purpose. The sword in particular was called Jisatsu Kasumi, and every swing and movement it made had the added effect of being completely silent. Zieg could neither hear nor see the attack coming and wouldn’t be able to react to it as his arm was cleaved from his body. Shade sheathed the sword silently as soon as he retrieved it and waited for Sozen and Kenryoku to follow his lead and continue retreating down the hall, hopefully finding the politician’s daughter on the way. This had suddenly become an unwinnable fight.
