Shade ignored Zieg completely. It seemed like he didn’t value the other shinigami’s insight or opinions at all. Perhaps this was a result of Zieg once being so much stronger than him and allowing him to close the gap between them so quickly. Shade had improved exponentially in the last year and had moved from third seat to captain in the span of two years, which was almost unheard of in Soul Society. The Kawada family head was still less than 50 years old and had only been a soul reaper for around twenty years and he had already ascended to the rank of captain. The scariest thing about the Kawada family was the rate at which they improved. The Kawada family had long been considered the prodigy factory of Soul Society. It was practically a given that a Kawada would graduate at the top of their class if they chose to become a shinigami.
Either way, the head of the Kawada family listened to Sozen and agreed with his conclusion. The daughter of the Central 46 member was clearly not a necessary part of Soul Society’s political structure like the politician was, but more importantly, she wasn’t as useful to the Vandenreich. The rescue of the Central 46 member would take priority and Shade sprinted down the hallway. There was no time for walking. The 40 minutes of walking that it would take them to reach the stairway was cut down to 10 minutes with the three of them running at a quick pace. Finally the three of them reached a dungeon filled with cells. Shade saw a beaten, ragged old man in the only occupied cell. Surprisingly they had met no resistance on their trip.
Shade put his hand on his zanpakutou. He didn’t like how easy things were being made for them. Last time they had met an opponent at just about every turn, but this time it seemed like their forces were spread so thin that they could just fall through the cracks undetected. Was their job being purposefully made more easy? That’s when the soul reaper smelled it. The stink of alcohol hung in the air and leaning against the bars of one of the empty cells was a man dressed in uniform, obviously intoxicated. It was likely that he couldn’t even stand straight without falling over. “I was supposed to kill you when you got here... But this is way more fun...Good night,” said the Vandenreich member before falling asleep.
Shade looked astonished as the only guard passed out in front of them. This would be a perfect opportunity to kill him, but then Shade thought better of it. The Vandenreich needed more officers like this one. The more men like the one in front of him that joined the Vandenreich, the weaker it would become. The drunk guard was a weak link in the Vandenreich hierarchy, and eliminating him now would likely cause The Emperor to replace him with someone better suited to his job. Shade approved of the quincy’s slobbish behavior, since after all, it made Shade’s job easier. “Leave him...” said the soul reaper to Sozen and Zieg, “It is better that he lives to hurt this organization yet another day...”
Alcohol was truly a disgusting substance and Shade abhorred the use of it. Not a single drop of the mind-altering drink had ever graced the captain’s lips, and Shade had no intention of allowing that to happen. With the only guard asleep, Shade looked around for a set of keys. If he found the keys to the cells, he’d release the prisoner through a process of trial and error, finding the right key after failing with the others. If no keys were immediately in sight, then Shade would simply unsheathe his zanpakutou and slice through the bars of the cell using a special Kawada sword technique that granted his weapon with increased cutting strength. “Come with me if you want to live...” said the captain in a robotic, monotone voice as he extended a hand towards the presumed Central 46 member.
