OOC: With Taka being online so infrequently, I'll just post for the Arrancar side for now. He can post whenever he wishes.
The change in the quality of air would be the first thing that Zeruel and Marcellius should notice. As they continued in the dark, they would feel as if they could breathe easier and see a little better. If they turned around, they might realize that they had finally left the fog. The air quality increased significantly as they weren't breathing in the thick soupy vapors, and their ability to see in front of them had also increased. They were standing at the edge of the fog, looking forwards across a small clearing in the trees.
On the other side of the forest, in the area not covered in dense fog, was a kind of tree that had not been incredibly visible from Zeruel's former vantage point atop the trees. But these trees were strange. Their bark was pitch black and covered in tiny thorns with red tips, and the leaves were purple with red edges. Marcellius would, if he tried, detect a faint spiritual pressure from these trees, as if they were not originally from the Land of the Living. At the present moment, there was ample space to maneuver between the trees, and looking past the initial trunks showed the dark forest stretching as far as their eyes would allow them to see.
If the two Arrancar stopped to take their bearings, they would notice that they came out of the fog moving in a south eastern direction. To the north was the beginnings of a flatter area of the forest with more sporadic placement of trees, while to the south was more fog. Heading due east, right into the black trees, would lead away from the fog entirely, though heading north would also accomplish that. In the dead of the night, it looked like Zeruel and Marcellius would not find an ideal place to sleep, and would have to keep going or settle on a less than comfortable place.
