They did not expect it. It was never to happen. And yet, after over thirty thousand years, it did. He returned. When that morning the sky was a milky white, covered by the clouds, they thought nothing of it, though it was a day in the summer when it first happened. And then, when the snow began to fall, and the ice and the frost began to form on the plants and the trees and the buildings, they began to question. Over a period of several hours, there was a great confusion. What exactly could be happening which would turn summer to winter? And for several hours, there was no answer to anyone. A few minutes before the beginning of the end, their leader realized it. He began to bark at them to prepare themselves. But it was too late.
Then all hell broke loose. In an instant, white light exploded into existence in the sky. They who wore black, the Shinigami who were guardians of the Soul Society, were blinded. And then it began to rain. It was many different colors. Red, white, yellow, blue, etc. Mostly it was white and blue. And all of it shone brightly. They were arrows. Literally hundreds of thousands of arrows of varying shapes and sizes began to rain down from the sky and destroy buildings and the alike of the Seireitei. The surrounding Soul Society was surprisingly unharmed. The Seireitei was the main target. As the arrows began to rain down, they who wore white began to appear. Not the Arrancar, as the Shinigami first believed.
The Vandenreich. The Invisible Empire of the Quincy that had returned from extinction. How long they had been back was unknown. What was known was their power as they in white military garments arrived. They numbered in the thousands. It was even possible that they outnumbered the Shinigami. Thousands of foot soldiers descended from the sky on bridges of white light, moving onto the ground and attacking Shinigami with arrows. Though the Shinigami fought bravely, their swords broke and shattered as blue flames licked the surroundings, and buildings fell into rubble and dust. The ice began to freeze the air and the trees and the life, and in the dozens Shinigami lives were lost.
As the war between the pawns escalated into a one sided slaughter, the higher ups began to show themselves. And at that moment, one by one, Quincy too began to fall as the Vice Captains and the Captains of the Gotei Thirteen showed themselves. The tide began to turn. And things looked like they would get better. Ah, how naive they all were. They were all there for once. Every Captain that the Gotei had. But it was of no avail. Even with all of them, the Vandenreich still had mightier forces to display. The Vandenreich still had forces that would put down the silly, foolish Captains for thinking that they could actually do battle against the might of an enemy that had been so prepared for them.
The blue light that shown in the sky as flames of bluest color formed in the clouds was blinding. Those who would be responsible for the defeat of the Shinigami at last arrived. The Stern Ritters. Twenty six in total number, there were two for every Captain. But there was no need for all twenty six to do battle with the Captains. Twenty one of them did battle instead with remaining Shinigami ground forces and Vice Captains, and began to destroy them instead. No, only five Stern Ritters would be needed to defeat the Captains of the Gotei Thirteen. The Five Generals of the mighty Vandenreich. These five were the ones that would ultimately defeat all of the current Captains, almost effortlessly.
Five great Quincy warriors. And with their power, not even the mightiest of Bankai could fight. It was a known fact that Quincy of the Vandenreich could steal Bankai. And yet no Bankai were stolen by the five generals. It was unnecessary. One by one, the Captains were blasted aside and defeated. They were beaten, battered, wounded, and destroyed. All were blasted away, until only one remained standing. Until, amid all of the dust and rubble, hundreds, perhaps over a thousand Shinigami had been killed, and the Seireitei had been leveled completely. Until, at that moment, every single Captain was either dead or neutralized. All but one. Proud, the old man stood his full enormous height. Proud, the muscular Shinigami rose up. Proud, the Captain Commander fought.
With his power, he was able to crush the five Vandenreich Generals to the ground. The five strongest of the Stern Ritters were made to bow before him, kneel at his feet. And then, perhaps again, there might be a turning point. Surely, the Captain Commander would be there to save the whole of the Gotei Thirteen with his incredible power. It was only to be expected, of course. He was the Captain Commander. His strength was legendary. Mythical. And as he broke the Quincy by the dozens or the hundreds, they began to shy away from him out of fear. Captains, though in no shape to resume battle, began to regain consciousness. They witnessed his glory. And they witnessed his defeat.
The air grew still. And quiet. Everything silenced and stopped as the god arrived. He appeared in the sky out of nowhere. There was no flash. He was merely present whereas he had not been before. He floated down gracefully, and his feet touched down across the ground. All within his presence would feel an ocean of power so insurmountable that they could not even begin to fathom what it truly was. They, essentially, would understand then that he was a being beyond them. All in that vicinity would see nothing of his face, for it was blurred. The shock, the wounds, and the injuries would blur the scene to all viewers. But regardless they would understand what was happening. They would understand it well.
The Captain Commander's eyes widened in shock. In horror. In disbelief. "It...it can't be..." he said. "You...?" The Emperor of the Vandenreich did not even smile coldly. He merely stood there in flowing white silk robes. The gold crown atop his head glistened despite the lack of sunlight. And his face, blurry to all viewers, remained stoic. "I could be no one else," he said. "Only I could have come this far. Only I could have survived this long, created this powerful of a force from scratch, and destroyed you all as I have now." The Captain Commander gritted his teeth. And for the first time in his life, he shook with fear. The Emperor took a step forwards, and the Captain Commander released his sword. "Bankai..." he said. "RYUUJIN RENGOKU!"
As the gigantic ocean of water fell from the sky, ready to engulf everything out of the Captain Commander's fear, it dissolved away. It was gone in an instant, reduced only to a sea of steam. And within seconds, even that sea of steam had vanished completely. The Emperor held a wheel made of black reiatsu in his left hand. "So simple..." the Emperor said. "So primitive. So very pathetic." He put the wheel away into the folds of his robe, then. And at that moment, the Emperor of the Vandenreich looked the Captain Commander of the Gotei Thirteen in the eye. An understanding passed between them, then. An understanding which years from then would never be understood by others. The moment...was brief.
All who witnessed that moment would tell of it in later years. They would tell of the moment when Kyousou Ningen fell. When the Captain Commander, 35th of the title, fell from his standing position. He fell backwards, his eyes blank and white, his mouth wide open, and his body steaming and filled with holes as blood sprayed out of over a hundred sudden wounds on his person. He fell back. As he fell, there were words from the Emperor. "You and all your kind are arrogant," the Emperor said. "You allowed the hubris of prosperity to dilute your mind and strength. This is what I warned you about so long ago. Your time has now passed... That's why this is goodbye and the end." As he finished, the Captain Commander hit the ground. And then all was still.
Hours later he and all who had been injured were in refuge underground as the Vandenreich finished off survivors up above, and began to dominate the rest of Soul Society and patrol it. It was there that reinforcements were called and promised from an unknown place. And it was there that the mission to survive began.
