It seemed strange that Raph was older than Luca. Old enough to drink in bars with his friends, anyway. Luca suppressed a laugh. He's like an ordinary loser, but with powers! Though to be fair, Raph effectively was one until fairly recently. Surely it was just force of habit. "Well, when I'm not on patrol for hollows and other evildoers, I also frequent the arcade. Oh, you know like any game that has the gun peripherals? Well, you're looking at half the duo who holds the high score on all of them!" Luca's lips curled into a shit-eating grin. He and Akira had gotten pretty good at them, and now was a time to tell someone about it. After all, most people tended to not care all that much, but if this one frequented the same arcade... "Yep, we're the fastest guns in the west! A regular Thelma and Louise...Wait, no! Bonnie and Clyde!...Ok, we're a regular Han and Chewie duo!" It was kind of embarrassing that it took him three tries to find a suitable pair of outlaws to compare himself and Akira to.
"My living arrangement sort of involves babysitting this kid, so I do that too. I read a lot, and play video games at home too, and uh... I cook for my family a lot." The cooking thing kind of slipped out, but Luca sorely wished it hadn't. Cooking wasn't exactly the hobby associated with cool hero types...nor was toting around some kid for that matter. Luca steeled himself for some stupid joke from Raph.

Raph watched the man as he started talking about going on patrols for hollows and…did he really just say evildoers? Seriously? Immediately dismissing it as being part of that whole superhorse schtick, Raph listened as he explained that the arcade was a favorite pastime of himself and a friend as well. This was good as Raph was always on the lookout for more gaming competition. It got more interesting when the man explained that he and his partner were the ones that had the high scores on the gun game. He and Mike had been trying to beat that for months, but no matter how high they climbed someone kept a step or two ahead of them.
“…Han and Chewie? That’s the best gunslinger names you’ve got? I mean…shit you could’ve called yourself Bob Munden. He’s the Guinness World Record holder for quickdraws, man.” Raph shrugged. “Unless you were going for bandits or some shit like that, Iunno.” Raph shrugged. It wasn’t really his business what the man wanted to compare himself to. As he went on a bit more about his life, Raphael couldn’t help but nod a bit, smiling. He could’ve made a joke about babysitting or cooking not exactly being the hero thing, but didn’t really feel like reaching for that low hanging fruit.
“Admirable, Luca, quite admirable. You sound quite responsible. After all I don’t know many guys that would cook, or babysit so good on you for that. I try my hand at cooking around my house a lot and it only sometimes ends with me having to make cup ramen.” He sighed. “Lemme tell ya, I enjoy it here in Japan but I miss Chicago sometimes. My friends and I had this favorite arcade down on East Illinois Street…” He sighed as he reminisced a bit. “Good times, good times… Anyways, would chillin’ at an arcade be somethin’ you’d prefer?”

Luca scoffed at Raph's rebuttal. Han and Chewie were the coolest couple of outlaws! Besides, you didn't need quick-draw artistry to have the high score in shooting games. Luca and Akira were living testament to that. Though before Luca could list some cool feats the two had, Raph had begun speaking again, and it was to compliment Luca. "Responsible" wasn't something he was often called. As far as compliments went, it was pretty low on the hierarchy, but Luca wasn't about to refuse it. "Oh you better believe I wanna hang out there!" Luca said through a wolfish grin. It actually was a really good idea. Why he hadn't thought of it sooner was beyond him. "Just, you know, fair warning: I'm pretty good." Luca practically jumped up and put his sunglasses on dramatically before practically running to the front of the store.
"Come on, we have to make sure we beat the after school crowd!" Luca would wait for Raph before beginning the walk. "So, if you lived in Chicago, how exactly did you get adopted by some Japanese people?" Luca asked. He noticed the seeming conflict in information he'd gotten before, but asking during the walk seemed to be more efficient, time-wise.

Raphael chuckled a bit as Luca expressed a desire to hang out there. Should’ve suggested that from the get-go and cut out some of the time that they’d used up in the bookstore, still was good to have learned some of the things he did. Luca warned Raph of his skill and with a nod, Raphael got to his feet, though he could barely stifle a chuckle as Luca dramatically put on his sunglasses and raced out the store. As he was about to make his way behind Luca, his phone dinged with a notification. Pulling it out of his pocket and looking at it, he smiled. A few quick taps and he’d sent off a reply, and was just coming up to Luca as he was putting the phone back into his pocket.
The moment that Luca mentioned beating the after school crowd Raphael’s eyes widened a second and he quickly picked up the pace. Raph loathed post high school crowds. He’d been stuck at a movie theater following one and he’d nearly beaten Mike. But suddenly Luca asked a question that he’d not really thought of until that one moment. He was a bit odd, he couldn’t deny, but that oddity wasn’t exactly by his own doing, though oddly by his own volition.
“Well… That’s a bit of an odd story. So my birth mom and adopted mom were both friends in Chicago, though I don’t think my birth mom had any power of her own. She and dad were targeted and attacked by a hollow. Eventually the hollow attacked my house and my adopted mom managed to fight it off. Without any other family, my adopted mom…well, adopted me and I grew up with her family, which was odd since they’re all quincies.” He smiled a bit sheepishly. “Anyway, the reason that I’m here is cuz I had a job with a startup tech company, setting up servers and things like that for different places. Buuut I lost that job. I managed to get a job as a delivery driver though, so… Blessings, I guess.” He shrugged with a bit of a smile. “What are ya gonna do, am I right?”
Post by Akira Hinosai on May 18, 2020 12:54:25 GMT -5
Luca almost winced at the mention of quincies. Luca's impression of them was far from pleasant, but Raph did seem decent in spite of his upbringing. It was a sad story by any account. "I, uh...guess it must have sucked being the ordinary person in a family with powers...Well, hey! You've got em now, so it's all good. You're one of the few people who matter in this world! Besides, ordinary jobs really don't matter." Luca tried his best to sound encouraging. Still, Luca's read of his backstory was a dismal one. There was nothing more despair inducing than being the only normal person in a family of special-power-havers. It was the kind of situation Luca might see in a nightmare, and to hear someone actually lived it was...upsetting. You might as well be a goldfish in a den of sharks. The only thing that makes life worth living is power, and being special.

He watched Luca a bit quietly, as the he talked about how much it must’ve sucked to be a person without powers in a family of powered people. Truthfully, Raph hadn’t minded that much. Them all having powers hadn’t bothered him, with the exception of when Brian had decided to mess with him, now that had gotten on his nerves. The amount of times that their mother had used some kind of spiritual string to trip them up when they’d tried to run was no joke either. He still could feel the bumps and bruises on his nose and forehead from where he’d run into walls and the floor. He frowned a bit at Luca’s words of “few that matter in this world”. That wasn’t right, every life mattered, regardless of power.
“Look, man,” Raph replied with a bit of a smile. “Normal jobs might not matter much to you, but I’ve got fucking bills to pay, so it’s preeeetty important to me, yeah?” Then, with a wider smile, he stated, “Besides, it gets me out and about the town, ya know what I mean? As much fun as I have on my computer, getting out and some fresh air is pretty good too.” He stretched a bit and cracked his knuckles. “It takes all kinds to make the world go ‘round, after all. We can’t all be heroes of justice.”

"Right, I didn't mean it like that..." Luca's attempt to comfort Ralph kind of failed. In Luca's mind he meant it more as Well, it doesn't really matter that you work a piece of shit dead-end job because spirits are where it's at. Though hearing it in his thoughts, he realized that wasn't exactly a comforting sentiment. Still, Raph was as nonchalant as ever, which Luca was fine with. He didn't want to push his new friend away so quickly. "Well hey, Uzaki has a server room, you know." Though as Raph started speaking again, Luca blurted his response. "Right, every story needs minor characters, however insignificant, but it's the main characters who really matter to the story."
Post by Raphael Laurent on May 18, 2020 20:32:49 GMT -5
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it nearly as harsh as it came out. I’m not exactly the best at speakin’ in a way that’s agreeable to some. Nearly got fired my first day for soundin’ like an asshole. Thought I was playin’ around with the boss and, well, I guess he didn’t find it nearly as playful as I did…” Raph scratched the back of his head, sighing, as he remembered that day. There were a lot of days like that he wished he could forget. Once he’d even pissed off his friends. Yet it was immediately after that Luca said something Raph hadn’t expected, that UE had a server room. It wasn’t so much that the place had a server room, hell Raph had been expecting that, it was what he’d said sounded more like “work with us” than anything else. And then it was when he blurted out about minor characters and main characters.
“Hey, man, I get where you’re coming from, I do. Everyone is the hero of their own story, yeah? I’m just one of those guys that isn’t…” He shook his head, with a bit of a laugh. “Also, I’m sure that Uzaki Enterprises does have a server room. That’s not surprising especially given the fact of its company size. Why tell me, though? I already told you that I’m not exactly a “noble hero”. I’m just a normal dude that happens to be able to mess with different aspects of the world around us.” Their footsteps echoed a bit on the pavement right before Raph asked his next question. “Why do you do the whole ‘hero’ thing, if you don’t mind my askin’?”

"Uzaki pays well, and he'll hire you as long as you've got powers. Come on, why not trade the wage-slavery for something extraordinary?" Raph's words ignited a fire in Luca. The fire grew hotter as he answered. Luca wasn't angry, he was driven. He knew the truth, and he would reveal it. The truth was good and anything less was bad. Of course, Raph was special. He had powers and was all cool. How could he just cling to the idea he was nothing? It made little sense to Luca. "Think about it. Most people can only dream of being special. They can let their imaginations run as wild as they want, but sooner or later they accept a boring life of mediocrity. They work, they sleep, they die without accomplishing much of anything. Not us. We can shoot lasers, materialize weapons, and ascend past normal human limits. We can fight the real enemies while they don't even get to watch from the sidelines! You ask why I do the hero thing? It's because I AM a superhero. I've got powers, and I can see the true nature of the world! I matter, so hero is a fitting description, no?"
As Luca spoke, he believed his words like they were immutable laws of reality. They were. It all made so much sense. Luca WAS special. No matter what anyone said. He was worthy and they weren't! He clenched his fist just thinking about the life he left behind in America. I hope hollows eat them all alive! Instinctively, he started grinding his teeth in a cold rage. Luca didn't even wish the outing hadn't become all awkward and emotional. He didn't care. He didn't.

In all honesty, his earnest view about Uzaki Enterprises impressed Raph; not that he was the first person Raph had met that loved his job, but he was the first one that had behaved with such conviction. Still, there were certain reservations that Raph held about it, things that just didn’t fully sit well with him and. There was the business aspect that Raphael had to consider which didn’t feel all that different from what he was doing now, and then there was the issue of Shinigami to consider. He knew that the Shinigami, realistically, gave orders and/or coerced collaboration with Uzaki Enterprises, and yet he was worried. As excellent an opportunity to learn more about his potential adversaries might’ve been, it was also more possible for friends in special conditions to be discovered. There were ways, though they would be difficult to truly walk.
Realizing that he’d been silent for a bit longer than he meant, Raphael quickly spoke up. “I appreciate the offer, and truthfully am a little stunned, but much as I explained to the girl from Xcution, I would have to think on it. I have some work to do of my own, before I can really commit to anything. I need to learn some things, practice some things and work on some others.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card before handing it to Luca. “It’s got my number on it, in case you need something. For the time being, I will at least be someone that can be called upon.”
The reason for his attitude, though, concerned Raph somewhat. Yes, all of the things that he’d said were quite impressive and amazing, even miraculous, but what worried him was the sense of how above Luca thought he was. “I suppose… Look, I’m just not a hero, is all I was saying. I wasn’t implying that you aren’t awesome cuz of your powers, I guess I just don’t feel all that awesome, knowing what my brother can do. You can only see someone shoot a hollow so many times before something like warping the way that something is really stops being impressive to you, ya know?” Raphael smiled a bit sheepishly, hoping to help him understand.

Luca grit his teeth in contemplation. Raph's response was neither best-case or worst-case. Luca still felt like he should be mad at Raph, but no matter how hard he tried, he could materialize vitriol towards him. Raph was naive, and probably had issues Luca hadn't the slightest idea how to fix, but he was...cool, in a strange sense of the word. Unlike Dia, he wasn't crazy, and unlike Amare, he wasn't stupid. He gave Luca a chance to talk to someone about his passions, and alleviated his boredom at the very least. Luca sighed in resignation as he put the business card in his left pocket.
Raph's smile was...weird. Luca didn't know what that look could convey any more than he understood the feelings it inspired. As far as Luca was concerned, it was all water under the bridge. He could see he wasn't going to convince Raph of much, so it was probably best to drop it. "Well, I think you could be a hero if you wanted." He figured a compliment was in order. Raph seemed down on himself, or so Luca thought. He wasn't sure, really. "Hey, you know what we need? Teleportation. Not to other realms or anything, just like across town." Luca figured a subject change was in order as well. "God, just tell me how far we have left, I'm scared to look." Luca covered his eyes to illustrate his point. It wasn't a joke though. Well, maybe it was played up a little. As he spoke he became acutely aware of how long they'd walked and how long they'd have to walk some more, all while the sun was still shining in full force.

Raphael chuckled a bit at Luca’s words that he felt Raphael could be a hero. “Only kind of hero I can really see myself being is like Sans, from Undertale, dated as that is. Not really a hero, but someone that really only comes out when it’s a make or break kinda situation, ya know? Typically I’m a not threatening me, not my problem kinda guy.” His smile was a bit less enthusiastic than Luca’s, though none the less genuine. Luca seemed the hero type, though. Ready for action at the drop of a hat. The fact that he’d put Raph’s card into his pocket, though, was more promising than anything else.
The idea of teleportation was something that hadn’t exactly occurred to Raph. If one didn’t possess such an ability to begin with, then he would one do so? How could one induce instantaneous travel? Much as Raphael liked to think of himself as ‘smart’ that was one problem that he really couldn’t wrap his brain around. “I agree. I would love to be able to teleport, but unless that was something that you already had, I’m not entirely sure how you’d go about doing so. If you’ve any ideas, I’m all ears.”
When Luca asked how much longer they had to go, Raphael looked a little bit and hesitated, unsure of it the question was rhetorical or not. “Weell… It’s another block or two. But once we’re inside there’ll be air conditioning and we’ll be able to rest. Don’t want you all tired before we game. Oh, that brings me back to something that I was about to say before…” Raphael smiled. “No soul command in there, yeah? Whoop my ass normally, so that I can say that I lost fair and square.”
Post by Akira Hinosai on May 25, 2020 22:09:38 GMT -5
Luca had no idea how to use soul command to win at arcade games, but he figured he'd keep that to himself. What am I supposed to do? Command the infrared rays to...not hit the screen? At least, that was how he figured games with guns worked. "Well you will be saying you lost fair and square, because I'm pretty good at these!" That, at least, Luca was certain of. He knew this place and its games like the back of his hand. There was nothing like winning to make ones day better. Not to mention, Luca did have to show Raph how cool he was. They were sort of almost friends now, and Luca had to make sure his new sort of almost friend knew how cool he was.
To be certain, they had beat the after-school rush, but surely there would be a few kids who cut class. Surely at least a few of them knew who Luca was. He stuck out in most crowds, especially crowds of school kids. Luca certainly liked to think he had a reputation among them. He and Akira did tend to draw attention sometimes. Regardless, Luca wasn't going to look bad in front of anyone.
Post by Raphael Laurent on May 25, 2020 23:13:23 GMT -5
“Well, that’s good!” Raphael replied, smiling a bit. “I would hate to think that ‘noble hero’ cheated on a game.” Yet, the smile he gave to Luca was genuine. “I don’t actually think that you would, just had to be sure, ya know? Even the people that say they’re the good guys and heroes can’t always be trusted.” There was a bit of a tense silence, something obviously bothering Raph, but him not really wanting to say what it was. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Luca, but it was more a test of HOW far he could trust the other man.
Yet, when they finally reached the arcade, Raph stopped for a second. “Look, you’re not a bad dude, I get that, and I’m pretty sure that the others at Uzaki Enterprises aren’t either. I’ve just got things and people I wanna protect and I don’t believe that such knowledge can be specifically trusted with them.” He reached into his pocket and procured a flash drive, holding it out to Luca. “But as a show of good faith, I want you to have this. It’s loaded with a hacking program that a friend and I developed, and one that I originally planned on trying to hack UE’s mainframe with, just as a test. But I want you to have it, either to destroy it or to give it to your boss so they can make a countermeasure for it. I just want you all to know that I’m not evil or mean you all any specific harm.”
Post by Akira Hinosai on Jun 6, 2020 16:41:34 GMT -5
"A hacking program?" It seemed like something out of a movie, though to be fair, most everything surrounding Luca was fantastical. "Relax, Raph. I mean, sure it would be cool to fight evil with you, but we aren't in the business of conscripting people to fight our battles." Luca broke eye contact with Raph as he took the USB. Luca was starting to sound nice, which was totally lame. Sure, they were friends now, but Luca was never going to be lame. "Well, if you ever change your mind, you know where to find us. Be your own master, and punish the guilty!" Luca struck a cool pose. That got Luca a few strange looks from passersby, but he really didn't care. "Yeah...I uh..." Luca was floundering. He'd been cool this entire god damn time, but towards the end, he was faltering and making a fool out of himself. It was as though he only had so many cool words to say before the lame ones started flowing out. Was there something he wanted to say? He couldn't find any words, much less string them together coherently. "I, uh, I had fun, Raph. You wanna, like...do this again some time?" His question was as lame as it was clumsy. He regretted it as soon as he said it. Asking instead of being asked was a gateway to rejection, and rejection was the hallmark of the pathetic, which Luca was most certainly not.
