The trio ate in relative silence for a time until Rin offered to clear the plates away. Of course, neither of these two would have any idea of Rin's fearsome reputation or how enormous a gesture this was on the woman's behalf, but they graciously accepted the gesture of politeness as anyone would under the circumstances. For soon enough, thoughts of good food and pleasant company would be naught but a distant memory as their attention turned to what needed to be done.
"This town consists of three districts that we've been able to explore so far", Sylvie plunged into her explanation. "Although you've only met us, there are actually a fair number of people who call this town home. Most reside here in the 1st district, whilst those who are more brave set up homes in the 2nd district and those who are either truly strong or truly stupid live in the 3rd district", she cotninued before he gaze flicked to Narth and he took over the role of speaker.
"This district is safe during the 'daylight hours', but at night you'll often see some of the lesser shadows that you might have seen when your world fell lurking about. The second district has a smaller window of safety and the shadows that appear there are stronger, faster and smarter than anything you'll find here. The third district is another level above that and only a handful of the refugees that wound up here are strong enough to survive there. But there are rumors of a 4th district that lies beyond the gate in the deepest part of the 3rd district, guarded by the most powerful shadows we've ever seen".
"Our theory is that what lies beyond the gate that they're guarding is a way out of this town. For years we've bene trapped here with no way out other than that gate. I haven't seen it myself, but Narth almost made it through once... he went in with a team of our strongest warriors and he was the only one to make it back... She trailed off, her eyes flicking to Narth again as she spoke and it was plain that she was worried that talking about what had happened might upset him. For his part though, Narth was just gazing absently out the window and at the night sky beyond.
"If you truly defeated a Darksider... then you may be the person we've been waiting for to break through the 3rd District and finally get out of this place. We all miss our worlds... our homes... our friends and family... but we don't want to live out our lives in this prison either. Especially not when the shadows are constantly becoming stronger. It's only a matter of time until they overrun us and eventually there will be nowhere to hide", Narth said with a calmness that demonstrated that this was something he'd given a lot of thought to over a long period of time.
"There's also a chance... that your friend might be in the 4th District", Sylvia said softly, but Narth cut her off with a sharp look. "You have no proof of that Silver", he admonished her. "If she helps us, it has to be on her own terms", he added with a pointed look in Rin's direction. Yet Sylvia wasn't to be cowed so easily! "Every time a star falls, someone new appears somewhere in one of the three districts. But sometimes they fall and nobody arrives in any of the 3 districts. Last night, three stars fell and we only found Rin. Doesn't that mean that there's a chance that the other people from those stars might have ended up in the 4th district!?
