July was not a fool. As he sat on the ground, eating the apple drops that Senshi had heartlessly refused earlier (who refuses the offer of sweets anyway?). He was actually quite enjoying them. He had two in his mouth together, and the sweet/sour taste of the artificial apple flavour mingled pleasantly with his saliva. He could feel the muscles at the back of his jaw tense slightly as the flavour washed over his tongue - now that was the sign of a good sour sweet. Hopefully his tongue would be slightly green afterwards too - he always found that quite amusing. He giggled slightly at the thought. There was nothing like a sweet to put a man back in a good mood.
So, when Senshi peeped out around the corner, July was no longer mad with her for turning the game of Ninja into tag. In fact, he gave her a lazy smile, as if he were perfectly content with life. And that was sort of true, for now. His ploy had worked - he had turned this game back into a close combat game of quick thinking, rather than the slow-paced affair that it had devolved into. And he was no longer mad at Senshi for that either - in fact, he had come to the conclusion that Senshi probably thought that this was the only way she could win the game. July did outstrip her completely in terms of mental and physical speed. She was just playing the game to suit herself.
”Odayakama-chan, how nice of you to join me. Care for an apple drop?”
He, however, had not finished his question before Senshi put the hand on the hilt of her sword. Immediately, July sprung into action - his instinct was 10 times that of Senshi, so he could think far faster, and begin his reactions to things far more quickly. Senshi would have barely had the thought of drawing her blade to perform her oath - July could not think of any other reason, she was not they type to turn this into armed combat for and she was taking this game far too seriously - before July had reached her, his hand on her arm to prevent her from drawing the blade. She could try dodge or block, sure, but July had used Shunpo (meaning that he crossed the distance at a Speed of 4000) to make sure he got there before she could react. Yes, he had to do so from a sitting position, but that only meant a fraction of a second of a delay to the acrobatic Squad 8 Captain.
”Now, now Odayakama-chan - there’s no need for that here.”
Despite his playful words, his tone was quite serious. Imagine if she had done it?! All the blood on her hand, on the floor, on his coat, on her clothes, on his coat, on the walls, on his coat… It was far more work than July wanted at this time of the day. Of course, she could try and continue - but July was slightly stronger than her, which meant that doing so would be extremely difficult. If he gave her a well-meaning smile, as if he understood her intentions (of course, he couldn’t understand them at all. Who on earth would willingly injure themselves when there was no advantage for it at all? She hadn’t advanced her game-state one bit). One thing was certain, though, continuing the game would be dangerous for her. July never enjoyed playing with someone who was taking things too seriously.
”Well, Odayakama-chan, it was fun.”
He tapped her again on the arm, as if to remind her that this was technically a point.
”We’ll have to do it again sometime.”
