Schultz smiled wearily as he leaned on a Brother's arm, feeling the drain of using so much Reiatsu in one sitting. He knew that his pool of spiritual energy was fairly significant in size, but even so, burning so much at once was still enough to leave him light-headed for a few minutes. He'd need a moment or two to rest, but once he was capable of pulling himself to his feet, the scholar had no intention of stopping in his defense of the church. Walls still needed to be put up, and any of the strange creatures outside had to be dealt with before they could break into the building. There were of course wounded to care for, and supplies to be provided to weather the siege...
Sighing, the young man pushed himself up as best as he could, placing a hand on his temple to try and steady himself. That same hand glowed with a soft green light as he tried to use his minimal healing prowess to push away some of the light-headedness he felt; it wasn't a practice he could see himself able to use in combat, but it was a good way to focus his thoughts when he had the time to concentrate. Clarity of mind returned slowly; it definitely couldn't be classified as a healing technique, more just a minor acceleration of his body's capacity to recover. Soon enough he was able to stand on his own, and though he still had a headache building in the center of his skull, Schultz believed that he was well enough to continue protecting the church.
Slowly he made his way back up the stairs and into the main area, which had been cleared out, with pews set up as barricades and the windows sealed off as best as the Brother were able. The doors were blocked off completely, and several Brothers stood around with a few of the more military-minded civilians who had requested permission to help defend the church. Though many of the Brothers had martial training, something that Schultz knew he sorely had to look into, those who had volunteered to help had training as soldiers, and two of them even possessed firearms to help defend against the zombie hordes. Every bit of help was appreciated, and Schultz made sure to pull one aside as they planned for defenses that would make it easier for them to hold off an assault until help arrived.
After explaining how Schultz's abilities worked, pointing out the bunker he created to remove any sense of incredulity, the two of them worked to design ideal defenses, drawn out on a blank sheet of Schultz's journal. Basically, their goal would be to narrow the area that the zombies could press in through, allowing them to be dealt with a few at a time rather than a whole mass at once. Of course, ideal defenses would prevent them from getting in period, but both of them knew that there was always the possibility that something could go wrong; best to be prepared for the worst than to hope for the best. Soon they had their plan down, and Schultz flipped his journal's pages to a few blank ones, preparing to write.
“Walls of solid stone that are fifteen feet tall and four feet thick will surround the church at exactly fifteen feet horizontally from each of its walls, connected on all sides to create a perfect loop. Each foot of wall's top will be topped a steel spike that are two feet long and a foot thick at the base.” That was the first part of the defense; the effect would essentially grant them walls with bladed tops to prevent anyone from climbing over, and hopefully keep the zombies out altogether. With luck, it would be enough to keep the approaching horde from entering altogether, but they did not know what the monsters were capable of. That was why there was more to their defenses.
“Within the church's entrance, a wall of stone two feet thick that reaches up to the church ceiling will extend from the left and right of the door, moving ten feet forward and narrowing the space between them to no more than five feet wide. At the end of the ten feet, they will extend to the wall on their side. Ten feet past where these walls would turn, another wall of stone two feet thick and reaching up to the church ceiling will extend from the church's east wall to its west wall. A gate made of steel two feet thick will appear halfway along the wall, but will only be able to be unlocked from the north side.” This second line of defense was more intricate, creating a funnel out of stone walls that would force the undead to fight them only two or three at a time rather than all at once. This also created a second line of defense for those within the bunker in case the horde broke through, hopefully keeping them safe until help arrived. It was a final defense as a worst-case scenario.
Once his will was done, Schultz found himself swaying again, caught and led back behind the gate. “Do not worry, Brother Schultz.” It was the man who had been advising him on their defenses that had him held upright. “We will take it from here; please, rest and recover your spiritual energy, so that you can be on hand in case we are unable to hold them off. Stay behind the gate, and serve as a last line of defense should it be necessary.”
“But...!”
“No buts. You lack any martial training and you're exhausted from building our defenses; you'd just be in the way right now. Please just wait here and recover your strength. We'll be depending on you.” With that, the man lowered Schultz to the ground and turned back towards the main door, pulling the gates closed behind him. The scholar sat there, still feeling unbalanced; his head hurt too much for him to argue back right that moment. He knew the man meant well but... Schultz felt strange, letting others fight this battle. Yet there was nothing he could do but trust in the defenders; he was running low on Reiatsu, and until he had time to recover and try and restore his spiritual reserves, there was nothing else he could do. Closing his eyes, he did the one thing he could do: he prayed.
“ Great and mighty king of the spiritual realms, Soul King who watches over and blesses our world with a cycle of life, I come to you in supplication. Please watch over those whose faith towards you is pure, guide those who would willingly follow your word and your will. Bless those vassals who believe in the protection and guidance of your people, those who act in love for their fellow man. May they find strength where their bodies might fail; may they find courage when their hearts falter. Guide them, oh great one, and lead them this night. Lead them to victory, so that your people will be saved. I beg this of you, Soul King... protect us all.”
Remaining Reiatsu: 500/4000 (-200 for each wall x7 total walls, -200 for the gate)
Fullbring Level One: 2/10
