One could never say Kaen Youji didn't take his training seriously. In the 7th division training ground the newly appointed third seat was training rigorously. Massive training weights were attached to his arms and legs, making it far more difficult to move than normal. Despite that, Kaen was practicing his kata in the field, and a number of broken logs indicated that he had been drilling techniques as well. Beads of sweat rolled down his brow as he completed his kata, and looked at the ground. He flexed his arms as if to test how much strength he had gained, though that was not the reasoning at all.
"Not enough, not enough..." He mused silently. Without removing the weights, he went down on his chest and began to perform a series of one finger pushups. A basic excercise, but one that would give results when performed regularly. "Ichi. Ni. San. Shi." He began. It was not uncommon for Kaen, once he began menial drills like this, to continue until he physically could not longer move. And then after resting, he'd do it all again. He began to get lost in his drill, becoming unaware that someone else was on their way to the training grounds as well.

Shade heard familiar sounds coming from Squad 7’s barracks. It was the sound of someone training. The san-seki was well-accustomed to such sounds. Being an obsessive trainer himself the third-seat was drawn to Squad 7’s barracks like a moth to flame. Shade stepped into the empty field and caught a glimpse of Kaen’s rigorous training. He observed with reserved curiosity as he made mental notes of different ways to train on the all nighters he pulled practicing with Buraindo Kira. “You want to cut him open, don’t you?” chuckled Shade’s zanpakutou spirit, “You know, you’ll have to fight him eventually if you plan on being the strongest shinigami that ever lived.” Buraindo Kira was clearly trying to manipulate Shade into picking a fight with Kaen. The sword spirit was hungry, and he wanted to try Kaen’s blood.
So the san-seki glared at his future opponent, observing his every move. Shade filed this information away in the supercomputer that was his mind. Could he defeat the man before him? Shade wasn’t sure, from the tiny bit of information he was able to pick up from meager training exercises if he could or not. But he was eager to try. It had been a full half an hour since he last trained, and he was eager to put a quick halt to his break. But Shade wasn’t the type to speak up. He simply glare from across the battlefield with his emotionless, calculating eyes. The wind blew his trench coat open like the hood of a cobra.
By this time Buraindo Kira had created a pool of blood underneath Shade. Buraindo Kira’s tendency to emanate the red liquid when he was sealed made the san-seki easy to track, but there was little he could do to stop this. His zanpakutou had always bled, and Shade just got used to that fact.
Kaen's senses weren't anything too incredible by most shinigami standards. But you'd have to be a complete idiot not to recognize the killing intent. Though Kaen was a poor sensor, it made him pause in mid-pushup. "Nijuu-san...." But he broke off, and paused. Just for the hundredth of a second he'd felt it, and looked up. And he picked out the form of Shade immediately. Kaen slowly climbed to his feet. His instincts were telling him something was off about this person here. What it was, he couldn't say, but something was off.
He didn't recognize Shade, but could tell he wasn't a part of his squad. No way Kaen would have forgotten someone who looked like that! "Hullo there!" Kaen began. "You're a new face!" He added on and began to approach Shade, his zanpakuto was fastened securely to his back. He hadn't yet removed the training weights he'd been using but a small smile was on his face. "Kaen Youji. 3rd seat of this division. And you?" He asked, holding out a hand as he approached Shade. Something wasn't right about this one, but he was a fellow shinigami, so Kaen knew he had to extend common courtesy to him. He'd be damned if he treated a non-noble like the rest of his family did!

Shade’s unblinking eyes remained fastened on the other san-seki as he approached him, “Hullo there!” said the third seat. “You’re a new face!” continued Kaen as he approached the third seat. Shade remained quiet and his eyes stared blankly at the man as he approached. In reality Shade wasn’t listening to the san-seki at all, but rather his zanpakutou spirit who was trying to cause a fight between the two. “Now he sees you Shade!” warned Buraindo Kira, “Here he comes to fight! Don’t get taken by surprise! Watch out! Be on your guard Shade! OR BETTER YET CUT THE FUCKER DOWN RIGHT NOW BEFORE HE KILLS YOU!!!” Shade’s hand unconsciously drifted to the hilt of his blade as Kaen got ever-closer.
Immediately the san-seki snapped out of listening to his sword. “Kaen Youji. 3rd seat of this division. And you?” said the shinigami introducing himself. Shade glared at Kaen’s outstretched hand for a second. This person was a third seat, like him. He was competition for lieutenant positions. Shade really wanted to fight the other san-seki after learning this information. Without taking Kaen’s hand, Shade’s glare redirected to the soul reaper’s face. “Shade Kawada, San-seki of Squad 11,” said other third seat in a dry and monotone voice. “KILL HIM NOW!!!” screeched Buraindo Kira with an outburst of rage. He was hungry and demanded blood!
Kaen stared at the man for a moment, before retracting his hand. The man introduced himself as Shade Kawada, 3rd seat of squad eleven. Well. That explained the killer instinct that Kaen felt from him. This man was dangerous alright. And it got Kaen's blood boiling. He was a fellow third seat on top of that! Oh, this would be fun alright! Kaen hadn't gotten a chance to face an equivalent from such a renown combat squad. There would be no resisting this. Kaen's face grew into a broad, mischievous grin at the prospect of a match. A fight was inevitable now, as both sides seemed eager.
"Pleasure ta meet ya. Shade huh? That's a good name. Easy to remember." Kaen replied. As he spoke, he took a few steps back, making some room between them as he unstrapped his training weights. First the arms. They both fell from Kaen's forearms with an audible THUD making imprints in the dirt. Next was his leg weights. They too quickly fell off, and made similar imprints in the dirt, if not a bit deeper. They were heavier than the arm weights afterall. Kaen cracked his neck. "Now, I'd be the last guy to stereotype, but I hear that the 11th squad has some top-notch fighters, huh? I'm feeling pretty curious as to how their third seat fights, if ya catch my drift, Karawara-san." Kaen replied, not realizing he'd mispronounced Shade's surname. Such things happened. Especially with him.

Now, I'd be the last guy to stereotype, but I hear that the 11th squad has some top-notch fighters, huh? I'm feeling pretty curious as to how their third seat fights, if ya catch my drift, Karawara-san, Kaen had a relaxed, easy-going feel about him. Kaen was the kind of guy that gave off a pleasant aura to be around, he was the guy you’d invite to parties, the kind of guy you knew you could count on, and the kind of guy who would laugh at the stupidest things with. Everyone on the planet would get these impressions of Kaen from the few sentences he spoke to the newcomer... Everyone except for Shade. The san-seki of squad 11 couldn’t comprehend different tones of voice. He couldn’t decipher body language or facial expressions. The only thing that Shade understood was words and combat. Because of this, the san-seki never changed his facial expression, not because he wanted to give off a creepy vibe or appear tougher, but because he wasn’t able to determine what facial expression to use for certain situations. Since no emotion came naturally to Shade, he was stuck in a world of black and white.
“YOU FUCKING HEARD IT WITH YOUR OWN EARS!!!” screamed Buraindo Kira “FIGHT HIM!!!” Shade blocked off the sound of his noisy zanpakutou spirit as he calculated his many options and chose the one with the largest chance of success. “If your wish is to become a weak, bleeding, quivering hull of flesh, then I shall grant it...” said the san-seki in a voice devoid of any emotion. The third seat’s left hand quickly went up to his right shoulder and grabbed the trench coat that was resting on his shoulders. With a swift pull in front of him, Shade stripped the trench coat off his back, leaving him in a normal shinigami outfit. But the purpose of this wasn’t to make fighting easier. The main purpose of this was to erect a wall of cloth between him and his opponent for a brief moment. During the moment that Shade was hidden by his own trench coat he unsheathed his zanpakutou. In an instant the sealed sword sliced through the cloth in a stab directly at Kaen with intent to skewer him, putting a swift end to the fight.

Kaen's grin only grew wider as Shade replied to his gauntlet of challenge. "If your wish is to become a weak, bleeding, quivering hull of flesh, then I shall grant it..." Kaen smirked at the line. "Living up to your squad's reputation huh? Nicely said." He replied, undaunted, as he reached up across his shoulder to his own blade. One of Kaen's favorite openings into his swordplay was an iaido strike, drawing and slashing in a single movement.
But Shade's own opening would have to change that. As soon as he threw off his trenchcoat, Kaen had a feeling of what was about to happen, and braced himself to move. He wasn't wrong. The instant he saw the movement behind the trenchcoat, he realized his opponent had gone for a classic opening. Kaen could use this to his advantage though. His blade flashed out of its sheath and arced downwards to parry aside Shade's blade. But the speed of Shade's strike as well as the timing had caught Kaen just slightly off guard. Kaen felt a sharp sting in his side as the edge of the blade skimmed across his skin. The thrust had missed, but a shallow cut had still been made.
However, his foe had made a mistake of his own, though he must have been unaware of it as he made it. The thrust he had performed had just carried him firmly into Kaen's realm of combat. Without even waiting for Shade's trenchcoat to fall to the ground, Kaen stepped forwards, his left leg whipping out towards Shade's right, intending to use the falling trenchcoat to hide his own strike-- a sweepkick. Kaen wanted to knock Shade off balance, if not make the 3rd seat fall over completely. To ensure his sweep succeeded, he combined the sweep with a swift straight punch at Shade's torso. He wanted to create the illusion that he was trying to strike Shade with the punch while he was exposed from his thrust. In truth, whether or not the punch landed was inconsequential. It would be excellent if it did, but if it did not, it was no matter. Its true purpose was to further draw Shade's attention away from Kaen's sweep kick.

Shade believed his surprise attack had failed when he didn’t feel Kaen at the end of his katana, so naturally Shade was expecting a counter. Shade heard his opponent step closer. Such a shift in body position was noisy, and easily recognizable by someone with Shade’s developed senses and experience. Shade instantly came to the conclusion he was going to use hand-to-hand combat judging by the distance that Kaen moved to. If he was going to counter with his sword then he would have been fine where he was. Right on queue the san-seki noticed a fist flying under the cover of his trench coat at his gut. The punch was fast, faster then Shade could have dodged if he hadn’t been expecting it. A simple twist and the punch passed Shade completely, but the initial attack was only a mask for the second.
Shade plummeted to one knee as the sweeping kick connected with his quad. Was Kaen toying with him? He was certainly fast and strong, perhaps stronger then even Shade. This was something that the san-seki wasn’t used to dealing with. He had always been the powerhouse in fights. So as soon as his knee hit the ground, Shade sprung up and leapt a few yards back holding his sword at his foe. No way someone in Squad 7 could be physically superior to someone in Squad 11 of equal rank! Shade’s mind ran through thousands of calculations. That was one thing that Kaen couldn’t take from him, was his scientific way of approaching every battle. The other opponent was simply a difficult equation that Shade had to figure out in order to win, and Kaen kept adding more variables to the already complex equation with every passing second.
That’s when Shade noticed the blood on Kaen’s side. All was not lost. He cut the san-seki! If he could do it once, then he could do it again! That was reason enough to be confident, it didn’t matter how strong the other person was. The fact remained that if Shade could cut them, he would inevitably win the fight. Shade glared at Kaen, his head still running through every possibility in an instant. He would do this until the other third seat made him do something.
Kaen couldn't help but be somewhat impressed at the evasion Shade had performed against his punch. The twist had put him well out of the path of his punch, and had it been the only move Kaen was attempting, it would have put Shade in an ideal position to counter. However it seemed Kaen's sweep rang true, striking Shade's leg and forcing the 11th squad fighter down. The first steps were always small. This alone was a victory in and of itself. Kaen followed Shade's movement with his eyes as the shinigami attempted to create space. Kaen tried to guess at what Shade must have been thinking. Even if the man had hid the surprise from his face, his body language gave away that he had not been expecting Kaen's speed, nor his strength. If Kaen was right, he'd be trying to use the length of his sword to keep Kaen at bay.
Kaen didn't have to look to know his Kodachi was shorter than his opponent's katana. Undoubtably in a swordfight his opponent would have the advantage. But then, if Kaen was a swordsman, no doubt his zanpakuto would have manifested as a longer sword. Kaen was a brawler, but a tactical one. He found ways to close the distance. And he saw he had put Shade on the defensive from the beginning. That was an advantage he couldn't give up. Kaen began a brisk pace towards Shade, zanpakuto held down to his side, blade angled towards his foe. He had to do something to close that distance with the katana. Simply knocking the blade out of the way wouldn't work. As a member of the 11th squad such an attempt would easily be parried. Kaen had to use his speed to get through.
Kaen attempted to use a Shunpo to kick off the ground, intending to propel himself into the air over Shade's head. As he did so, his kodachi slashed downwards, aiming at Shade's shoulder. Although he could have targeted the head, there was no need to. This was only a sparring match! Kaen had no desire to cause permanent injury to such a skilled warrior. As Kaen fell towards the ground, he twisted in the air, to allow him to land in a crouched position, hoping to land behind Shade. Such a landing would enable openings for further attacks. Kaen wanted to keep Shade on the defensive here, and he felt confident he could do so.

Many things came into play in the next few seconds, but the deciding factor was speed. Shade was slow compared to the athletic squad 7 shinigami and was ill-prepared for what happened next. In an instant Kaen disappeared, only to reappear above Shade in the middle of a downwards slash. Needless to say the cut connected and created a thin line of blood from the front of the san-seki’s shoulder to the back. However, the cut wasn’t as deep as Kaen had intended. Shade could take a lot of punishment and the difference in their spiritual pressures didn’t help Kaen injury the other san-seki. Shade calmly observed his shoulder begin bleeding, fully aware that Kaen had crouched behind him. But he didn’t attack. He had been struck, that much was clear. With slow, drawn-out movements the san-seki used his left hand to touch his injured right shoulder. Shade moved his left hand slowly in front of him after he did this, observing the blood on his hands with a distant look on his face.
His back remained facing Kaen and he seemed to completely forget about him for a few seconds as he stared at the blood on his hands as if shocked that another san-seki could draw his blood. But Shade wasn’t shocked, rarely did he show any emotion of surprise, and when he did it only showed in his eyes. “Blood...” said the san-seki to himself, “We need this red liquid to do everything we do. Breathing, moving, and living... Blood is used by our bodies for every one of these. But fighting... Fighting is the act of stopping these necessary functions in your opponent.” Shade turned to glare at Kaen, “So wouldn’t you agree that a sure path to victory would be to drain your opponent of all his blood?”
“LET ME FEAST ON HIS BLOOD!!!!” screeched Buraindo Kira, “LET’S CREATE A CORPSE OUT OF THIS FUCKER!!!” Shade took the blood on his hand and spread it across his katana with a quick swipe over the flat of the blade. “Drink... Buraindo Kira...” said the san-seki in a monotone voice. The quicker he released his sword the closer he would be to victory. In an instant a mouth formed in the center of the bloody blade. In a disgusting display, the sword’s mouth began vomiting a bloody mess of flesh, veins, and things that appeared to be organs which covered the blade and transformed it into a huge, 120-pound zweihander with a mouth in the center of the mess of bloody flesh. Shade spun the shikai around his wrist as if it weighed next to nothing and brought it down at Kaen with an immense downward slash. It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible to block an attack coming from such a heavy blade, even with the difference in strength. However, blocking would most likely not be Kaen’s first reaction, considering the sheer size of the zweihander.

Kaen was not so focused on his plan of attack that he had missed the shallowness of his cut. His blade, he realized, would be of limited effectiveness. However, that would not stop him. If his blade couldn't cut him, then he'd take him down with hand to hand attacks. That was his forte anyways. It was an inconvenience and nothing more. He saw his foe had not reacted immediately, so Kaen took advantage of this, springing out of his crouched position with a back kick, aimed for Shade's kidneys. However, after a brief monologue Kaen realized his opponent's intent-- his release. Shikai. Kaen glanced at his Kodachi. Should he release?
As soon as Shade revealed his zanpakuto, Kaen realized the answer to that was clear. His Kodachi would not be a match for that greatsword. But it had its flaws. Although Shade clearly wielded it with great skill, its sheer length would mean recovery would be slower, and the blade would have more blindspots. Kaen would have to watch out for those, and take advantage when he saw them. He did not have to wait long for what he percieved as a blindspot. A straight slash downward. Kaen knew he had no chance of blocking it without suffering injury, but he fortunately didn't have to.
As Shade came down with his tremendous blade, Kaen used a sidestep and twisted his body. He could feel the wind of the blade passing by his body, but he appeared to have successfully dodged. Trying to take advantage of the sword's blindspot, Kaen stepped back in towards Shade, this time performing an elbow strike aimed at his temple. If he could connect, he was sure he could begin a chain of combos, and keep pummelling him until he went down! He couldn't let Shade escape again. If he allowed that, then getting in close to him would become immensely more difficult, do to the longer blade, and him already passing his guard twice now.

The shikai created a crater in the ground as it smashed into the ground. But Kaen remained unharmed. Shade’s recovery time was less then most people first expected, considering the size and weight of the zweihander. Shade yanked his shikai out of the ground as fast as most people would pull a normal katana. But even this speed wasn’t enough to keep the san-seki from delivering an elbow to the side of his head. Shade stumbled backwards as the blows kept connecting. Kaen was landing blow after blow on the san-seki’s face and body. The san-seki stepped backwards with every punch and kick that hit him, yet Kaen kept advancing. He couldn’t keep this up for long without falling to the ground. Kaen’s punches were above par for a shinigami of his rank and jarred Shade’s brain with every immense hit. But the san-seki would take advantage of the rhythm he allowed Kaen to fall into.
A punch was aimed directly at Shade’s face but missed its mark completely as Shade used a shunpo to transport himself behind Kaen instantly. the san-seki caught Kaen in mid-punch as his zweihander aimed out directly at his midsection. It would be a few moments before the squad 7 shinigami realized that Shade stood behind him. The san-seki was sure to cut Kaen, if only just a scratch. His timing had been flawless, but this attack came at quite a cost. His face was bleeding from the multiple blows he had taken. Buraindo Kira practically traveled at the speed of a normal shinigami wielding a katana. Kaen’s speed was impressive, but his senses weren’t good enough to quickly determine Shade’s location and completely dodge the blade that was already heading at his back.

Not only had Kaen's elbow landed but he managed to continue landing hits on his foe's face-- a tender point for even the toughest of foes. There was no way he wouldn't be unphased by these attacks! But it seemed Kaen's had grown too complacent in his advantage, for, as he launched a fist at his opponent's face, Shade evaded it and used a Shunpo. Crap! I got careless! He's adjusting to my speed! Kaen thought in alarm. He tried to extend his senses, to guess where Shade would come from. He had his opening, and Kaen knew that after that barrage of blows he would hardly be using this chance simply to make space. There would be a counterattack.... but where!
Kaen took a defensive stance, scanning around for Shade, and he caught a hint of movement with his peripheral vision. A blade that long was hard to use completely unnoticed afterall. But Shade was already too far into his swing for Kaen to stop it. All he could do was lean away and attempted to halfsword with his Kodachi in an attempt to block it. Of course, the swing's momentum, and the blade's weight made this a difficult prospect. The collision between the two blades actually jarred Kaen's arms, and pushed the third seat's blade back. Kaen felt a savage cut open up in his side. Had it not been for his last second block, he felt that blow may have nearly split him clear in two! Not an attacking to be toying around with.
Kaen's block had saved him that one round, but the swing's finish still knocked the shinigami back several paces. Kaen stumbled back, Kodachi up defensively. Damn! What a blow! There's no way I could take another of those![/i] Despite his concern, Kaen's face managed to remain calm and collected as though he was still formulating a strategy-- which he was. He needed to even the scales here, and knew one method that might allow him to do so.
Kaen's blade flipped into a reverse grip, and he set his arm straight out, the back of the blade against his arm. "Burn Hachiryuu!" Kaen proclaimed. An eruption of brilliant orange reiatsu surrounded Kaen's form, giving off an intense heat. After a moment, the reiatsu began to condense towards his right arm. At last it faded away, showing a metal arm brace that covered his entire forearm. Two pincer-like claws emerged from the tip of it, and a black flame pattern covered the arm brace. A massive blue gem was set in near the back of it. It was not, perhaps the most impressive looking of shikais, but to a foe that considered things it was very practical, given Kaen's preference to hand to hand combat. Now he could have both hands free, without compromising his defense much.
"Round two, Kerima-san. Shall we begin?" Kaen taunted, entering a combat stance that highly resembled a Karate fighting stance. It was only to be expected. Karate was originally developed as an empty handed fighting style to combat weapon using foes. It was therefore, in Kaen's eyes, a very appropriate form to be using against this foe. Kaen's eyes were burning with fighting spirit, but his smirk remained on his face, as though taunting his foe to come at him.

Kaen managed to avoid the full brunt of the blow as he re-directed the zweihander. As Shade’s shikai dug into the other third-seat’s side his reiatsu surged indicating that he gained some sort of power boost from it. This was a major turn of events in the battle. Kaen had held the upper hand since the beginning, but now it was Shade that was winning. The tiniest scratch could spell victory for Shade. For his blade was a gluttonous mass that devoured his opponent’s reiatsu through any wounds he created. Even now he had begun to slowly devour Kaen’s reiatsu.
The two 3rd seats gained distance between each other. Shade’s face was bleeding and bruised, but his expression was statuesque. He glared at his opponent, unable to decipher the man’s facial expressions. Finally Kaen released his blade. Kaen’s shikai took the form of a brace-like gauntlet with shorter range then his short sealed zanpakutou. “Round two, Kerima-san. Shall we begin?” said Kaen, messing his name up for a second time. However the san-seki failed to be bothered by this. What good did it do the predator to be remembered by the prey? As long the predator was stronger, nothing else mattered.
Shade took Kaen’s inactivity to mean that he was waiting for him to deliver the strike that would initiate phase two of this sparring match. So the san-seki rushed Kaen, still unsure about what his shikai did. Shade speculated that it would be best to keep Kaen at a distance so with a lunge he aimed his zweihander at the other shinigami’s head. Shade was going for speed instead of power as he recovered quickly and began sending a barrage of quick strikes at Kaen’s head and midsection with his heavy sword. He was only trying to pull off another scratch, not a match-ending blow. Unsure what to expect, Shade remained wary of his opponent’s new power.

Kaen had yet to notice the drain on his reiatsu, and so he felt fairly confident in waiting out his opponent this time. And Shade did not dissapoint in the least. Kaen watched his foe charge at him head on with a long thrust. Kaen noticed a shift in his opponent's footwork. He was trying to keep Kaen away this time. Fortunately, Kaen had ample time to prepare this time, and moved his arm in a standard karate high block, deflecting the blade upwards, away from him. He immediately began a step in, but stopped and was forced back, as Shade withdrew his sword and unleashed a barrage of blows that Kaen would not have expected of so massive a weapon.
Kaen acknowledged he had been forced on the defensive, and the length of that sword meant that he couldn't use his hand to hand attacks to create an opening. Fortunately, there were other options. He just needed Shade to make the right strike... Having taken advantage of Kaen's own complacency in his strikes, Kaen had little doubt that Shade would be vigilant and avoid falling into a set pattern. But that was fine. Kaen noticed that although Shade's attacks were fast, they lacked the power of his initial thrust. He was taking a quantity over quality approach. Regardless, Kaen's speed allowed him to keep up, using his arm guard to deflect the faster and weaker blows, or slip away from the ones he couldn't block. But he couldn't continue this indefinately. He needed a chance to counter and fast.
Kaen took a quick step back to avoid a blow aimed at his midsection, seeing the blow miss him by a hair. He expected Shade to step in afterwards, but that was fine. He had enough time to counterattack. Kaen thrust his hand out, and a sudden jet of flame burst out of his hand, aimed directly at Shade's face. It was an unshaped flame, so it would not have the same power as his zanpakuto was capable of. Nevertheless, it would be a rare person, who could claim that having their face and eyes seared with fire did not bother them. Kaen hoped that the surprise, and potential blinding effects of his flame, coupled with the comparably short range that they were duelling would enable his flame attack to strike true, giving him his opening.
Success or not, however, Kaen made a risky move, charging in immediately after the flame, aiming a powerful front kick towards Shade's groin, intending to disable him further, and make him more open. Victory did not favor the meek. In order to obtain victory, Kaen understood that you had to take risks. His right arm was up protectively, ready to block in case, Shade had still managed a counterswing, but nonetheless, Kaen was focusing all his efforts following his flame burst on the kick he was now throwing.
