This is a training thread between two of the more faster shinigami in Seireitei: Captain Alkaid Akane of the second division and Third Seat Kaen of the seventh division. The two will generally be fighting hand to hand though later the two can resort to practicing with their shikais against one another. This shall take place in the courtyard of the second division: basically a large circular arena. This is NDE, the special terms were listed above,no handicaps, conditions, or wagers.

This was a real privilege. Training with a captain wasn't something you got to do all the time. Alkaid was another captain Kaen was unfamiliar with. She was one of the younger captains-- heck, even Kaen was older than she was. But hey, Kaen liked training with captains and learning about them. And as the captain of squad two, she was likely to be a hand to hand fighter. Something that suited Kaen quite well.
He hadn't met someone able to fight him equally in hand to hand combat yet. His fellow third seat, Shade Kawada may have bested him, but it had been due to the powers of his zanpakuto, rather than actual combat skill. His own Vice Captain had also beaten him, but again, it had been through experience and swordsmanship. During their duel, Kaen had proven to be a far superior combatant as far as hand to hand combat had been concerned. It had been so long since he'd had a worthy match with martial arts that he couldn't help but be excited at the prospect of a hand to hand battle. Especially with such a promising opponent.
Kaen was in his usual combat uniform-- a somewhat customized outfit made for hand to hand combat. The sleeves had been cut from his uniform, and the pants were a lot less loose. Some looseness was still there for ease of movement, but they were not the flowing robes of most shinigami. Kaen liked this design as it gave him considerable freedom of movement. Also the removal of the sleeves made him considerably harder to throw, as many throwing martial arts focused on grabbing the sleeves of the opponent, as wrist escapes were commonplace in such styles.
Kaen was patiently awaiting Alkaid's arrival, scanning the battlefield. After his spar with one of the unseated officers in his division; Manabu Brock, Kaen acknowledged the possibility that Alkaid would attempt to enter with a sneak attack. It would be fitting of the leader of squad 2, though it would bother Kaen that she might feel she had to do so. Ah well. There was nothing else to do but wait on her. She would get here when she got her, and she would get here how she got here. All Kaen could do was wait.

"Should be arriving any minute now..." The female captain thought in her mind as she traveled from rooftop to rooftop to her destination. Alkaid had requested that the third seat of the seventh division, Kaen Youji, meet her in the courtyard of her division for a sparring match. She had latley been pulling the records of the seated officers, vice captains and captains she had and came across his file with interest. It had seemed that he, unlike Alkaid, was born in Soul Society and was one of the stronger seated officers currently. As expected of the seventh division. Not only in strength, it had seemed the male shinigami had quite a bit speed on him, perhaps even slightly faster then Alkaid even though it was not a large marginal to make a giant difference. Still, he would prove a worthy opponent to her, his file indicating his usage of several fighting styles from the human world in which Alkaid found quite odd. A "pure blood" shinigami learning many human fighting styles rather then settling for one or two to become a master in, like Alkaid? Kaen did indeed have some years on her, a little over ten, but Alkaid had spent her shinigami life honing and perfecting her hakudo fighting style.
Alkaid was currently wearing her custom-made shinigami captain robes. This consisted of a short top of a black kimono with white lines outlining it and a white string tied to secure it, the back of it is accented by a large white fan with gold designs of her squad's symbol on each of the fins of the fan. She also had a sash, which resembles a fox's tail, the top of the tail being white while the rest of it is a light orange, around her waist which represents her agility and love for speed. She wore four large triangle shaped open white skirts that are next to eachother and have gold lines going across each of them, each line connecting to the next. As for her bottom half, she wears knee high black boots along with black karate gee shorts. Each side of the legs of the boots have several small purple triangles going up along it. The bottom of the boots are a fiery red color. The tops of the boots are actually open, making them zōri like so they make almost zero sound when a step is taken and the sound heard is barley audio able. They also have 5 leather like straps on them to secure the boots. Her zanpakuto, a wakashi, was sheathed and located on her lower back, strapped there horizontally.
Moments later, after one last leap off a rooftop, she arrived in the courtyard and spotted the back of Kaen's head, him waiting patiently in it. "Arrived earlier then I thought." She murmured in her head as she traveled through the air, seconds later being right above his head and traveling down on it. Casually, she landed on the male's head and bent over a bit, looking down at his face. "Greetings, Kaen Youji, thank you for arriving." She stated with a light smile on her, lightly leaping off his head and turned in mid air, landing several feet away from and facing him. She examined the male with her eyes, looking up and down him as she crossed her arms behind her back, a habit she inherited from Old Lightning when he was still alive. She was liking what she was seeing, he matched exactly how the records stated him as. She wondered to herself if Sayuri would create a hologram system for their files so they could see the person right then and there from the file rather then having to have a mental image in their mind as to what the person looked like. Oh well.

Kaen suddenly felt something-- no. Someone land on his head. He staggered initially from the unexpected landing, but had no doubt who this was. "Ah. Hello there, Alkaid-taichou." Kaen replied surprisingly formally. As it was, Alkaid outranked him, so she was due some respect, even from the normally unrefined third seat. She's lighter than I expected....[/color] Kaen thought. Really, Alkaid had felt lighter than a lot of the weights Kaen lifted for his training! Kaen filed away that information for later. Weight could count for a lot, in a fight, if you knew how to use it.
He noticed Alkaid looking him over, and Kaen was unconsciously doing the same. He really knew little about this captain. As a member of squad 2, and its captain, he expected her to be fast, and expected her close quarters skills to be first rate. Well. That was fine by him. Kaen could fit that description too! He rolled his neck from side to side, cracking it. "I appreciate this opportunity, Alkaid-taichou." He stated. Though he'd been receiving training from captains most of his life before coming to the Academy, Kaen never underestimated the privilege of getting such a chance.
Kaen's back leg shifted backwards to help act as a brace, as he went into his combat stance. It was a combination of a few stances. The legs were reminiscent of his karate background, but his upper torso showed his boxing background-- fists tight to the body, with the forearms protecting his body and his fists shielding his face. "I am ready to begin whenever you are, Alkaid-taichou." He told her, the positioning of his fists hiding a devilish grin. Kaen was looking forward to this! He'd been trained by captains in the past, but he'd never gotten the chance to actually spar with one before! This was exciting for him! What would Alkaid throw at him? He was sure he'd find out shortly.

Alkaid watched with interest as he took an unusual stance, guarding his face with his fists while tightly having his arms against his body. It was similar to a boxer's arms stance, but she noted that his foot stance was more of a martial artist, for a boxer would stand shoulder width apart and parallel. Odd, combining these two kinds of styles. This meant to Alkaid that she would have to strike the shinigami from multiple areas that were unguarded. Luckily for her, aiming for exact positions on the body was something of her specialty, enjoying to exploit the disabling points on the body. Anyway, he was now ready, and he was giving her the pleasure of performing the first strike of the match. Good. "Right." She uttered with a grin, sliding her right foot back behind her and stood with her left side facing the male. He rose her arms up infront of her, keeping her elbows locked against her hips and had her knuckles aimed at Kaen as she kept her arms slightly bent so they weren't fully extended out of place. It was now time to launch her attack.
Kicking off of the ground, she sprinted at the male, straight forward at him. Nothing special, no zig zagging, nothing fancy so far, just straight forward closing the distance between the two in a few seconds. In hardly anytime, she was only a couple of feet away from Kaen. When she came within this range, she suddenly came to a halt, while twisting herself leftward and rose her right leg up from the ground into a chambering position. This was to maintain control of her kick when she performed it, in case she had to halt the kick for a reason. Swiftly, in one snapping position, she performed a high round-house kick to the side of the male's head, aiming the flat top of her black, leather, knee high boots at it. As she performed this, she kept her hand guard up, in case the male planned to deliver a counter blow. It was meagerly a testing blow, to see if the male could keep up with her.

Kaen watched Alkaid take her own fighting stance. It definately looked like an aggressive one. With her elbows at hip height, she'd have limited defences against any blows to the upper torso or head. Which meant she intended to keep Kaen on the defensive. Alright then.... let's see if you can do that, taichou... Then she lunged forwards. Kaen noticed how fast she was, alright. But.... no. Kaen felt he could keep up with her at the speed she was going at now.
But she stopped and chambered her leg. Even though she did it quickly, Kaen was able to read what she was about to do from that momentary pause. Seeing her leg launch up at his head, Kaen lifted his arms and instead of avoiding, took a step towards Alkaid, letting his arms absorb the kick with his superior strength and driving in towards her. For an instant, she'd be on one leg only, and Kaen was going to use that to his advantage.
Kaen feinted a direct jab towards Alkaid's face, but suddenly pulled it back at the last instant. It was only a distraction. Kaen's actual purpose was to perform Ashi Bari-- a leg reap from karate. Kaen's leg snapped forwards, intending to sweep Alkaid's leg out from under her and knock her to the ground, as she recovered from her kick. Ideally he would catch her leg before her kicking leg had set back down. Kaen's arm snapped back to his hip and he fired a karate gyaku tsuki (reverse punch) directly at Alkaid's torso. This would work whether his leg reap was successful or not.
If the leg reap had been successful, the punch would simply strike downwards to her torso from shikodachi (a strong low stance with the legs spread wide to support the body's weight). Even if it failed, however and Alkaid maintained her balance, there was no reason Kaen couldn't simply shift his plans and launch it at her torso from his regular combat stance either, to chase her with his attacks.

Of course she stopped and chambered her kick in a swift matter, it was for one word: control! If she threw a wild kick at the male, or any opponent whats so ever, then she would not be able to counteract any actions performed against her during the attack. Kaen had gotten it wrong on why she had kept her elbows locked at her hips; it was purely defensive. Since she had done this, she had the ability to use her arms in any form of defense that would be used to block an incoming blow or in any way she chose if she choose. However, Kaen had at least reacted accordingly to the attack, in a way that Alkaid had wanted. Her instincts kicking in, she used the driving force of the push on her leg to her full advantage. Twisting her hips rightward during the push, she used its force to spin back from her opponent slightly. Spinning clockwise, she brought her right leg down in a low arcing motion as she was performing the spin, using the momentum to increase her speed beyond its norm. The maneuver now positioned the back of her right leg facing the leg in which Kaen was attempting to sweep with. Alkaid's aim with this sweeping motion with right leg was to slam the heel of it into side of Kaen's sweeping foot.
With performing these actions, it would be timed in which her heel would collide with the side of his foot, the sheer speed of it pushing it off course and to the side since the focus of his attack was simply back and forward. Still using one leg, the female leapt back and landed on both of her feet away from the male to assume her fighting guard once again, having misdirected his sweep. She swiftly began circling the male, looking at the strong points of his guard. The male no doubt would expect her to find a weakpoint in it, however, could he correctly guess which one she would go for? She easily spotted several points on him that she could use to her advantage, it was all just a matter of time. For now, she was the one keeping her distance from the male shinigami, patiently waiting. She was in no hurry to end the sparring match at all, she wanted to see what he could perform offensively against her. She WANTED him to attack her.

So. That was her answer, was it? Alkaid had successfully checked Kaen's sweep kick with her own, but because of his greater strength, Kaen was able to maintain his balance easily, and still fire off his reverse punch at Alkaid's torso, which she avoided by jumping backwards. But Kaen wasn't going to let her go that easily! As Alkaid leapt back, Kaen lunged forwards, firing a jab at Alkaid's face. This one was a distraction though. A distraction to hide the fact that Kaen had suddenly shifted in fighting styles. He went from karate, right into his Muay Thai with surprising fluidity.
Immediately following his jab, while Alkaid's attention would be up high, Kaen sent another low strike. This one, however, was not a sweep kick. It was a Muay Thai leg kick. A powerful low kick connecting with the shin, targeting Alkaid's thigh. Delivered with Kaen's strength, especially against Alkaid's dramatically lower strength, this blow would likely hurt considerably, and severely hamper her mobility if it landed. But this time, instead of continuously pursuing, Kaen took a step back, now using his Muay Thai fighting stance. Kaen had been training in his fighting styles for well over a century. His mastery of them far surpassed the level of mastery any human could have gained, simply due to the time he had spent training them. Alkaid would be best off not assuming that just because Kaen had studied and trained in many martial arts meant that he was only mediocre in all of them. It would be a dangerous mistake to make.

Alkaid was enlightened that the male finally made a move to attack her, she wanted this. Why was this? Because she already knew how she was going to counterattack him. Her eyes locked onto his chest area, dead center where his shoulders were aligned with his chest, she was able to see both his upper and lower body into action. Seeing the lunging punch coming, Alkaid judged the distance inbetween them, leaning back slightly so it was just enough out of his reach, that is if he was aiming to punch her in the face. Still, she only had to bend back a bit, so it did not interrupt her seeing the male's next action. The punch stopped a few inches where her head originally was, proving that it was indeed a fake and Alkaid saw the lift of the back leg, indicating a kick of course. It wasn't until halfway of the kick reaching its destination did she execute a maneuver, vanishing from sight when it right as it was just about to hit her; Kaen's target destination. A shunpo, this was what Alkaid had prepared for against the brutal fighter Kaen. Alkaid's fighting style revolved around of course evasion and attacking weak points of a person's body, no matter how strong they are. That was it. She appeared in a second just above the spot she was in, her feet half a foot above Kaen's head. As soon as Alkaid appeared out of shunpo, she kicked forward with her left leg, intentionally nailing Kaen straight in the forward with the bottom of her boot as she was dropping down from the air.
The attack would land right at the instant Kaen's sweep had finished fully, the stepping technique and retaliation kick being swift to the point that by the time Kaen saw it, her boot would be a mere inch from his head and it would be too late to move. Their speeds were too similar and Kaen's senses were just average. In any case, the kick would propel Alkaid back ten feet, putting distance once again between the two shinigami, Alkaid resuming her guard stance with her hands extended out infront of her, clenching her fists. "You're not using you strength properly, Kaen Youji, you obviously have speed and strength so use it." Alkaid stated, a fierce look in her eyes. Alkaid could already tell something from Kaen; he did not know his own strength. Alkaid knew that she would be matched against stronger foes, that is why she based her training on speed and pointing out flaws on a person. Kaen however had the strength and speed to defeat opponents but he was not using correctly! Reiatsu: 1950/2000
"Never underestimate your opponent; no matter how weak they way seem."
Alkaid's Shunpo didn't take Kaen by surprise, unfortunately for her. She was the captain of squad two, and such high speed techniques were only to be expected! Alkaid's kick certainly connected, but it would have far from the reaction she was looking for. For a couple of reasons. The first was that she was initiating her kick from less than a foot away. There'd be no time to build force or accelerate. Second, she was kicking from the air. She had no grounding to strengthen her kick, which was usually accomplished by the non-kicking leg. Now, jump kicks could work, but they typically needed momentum, which Alkaid didn't have. The third reason was her target. Her kick collided with Kaen's forehead-- arguably the worst part of the head to hit. When boxers took hits they often took them on the forehead, whenever possible due to its hardness. It was easier to absorb a blow that way! Fourth was the sheer difference in strength. With six times the captain's strength, Kaen was able to absorb the force of her blow with relative ease.
As a result of this, the only result of Alkaid's kick was a slight backwards step on Kaen's part as well as his head snapping back slightly in a flinch. Alkaid had used this as a springboard to catapult herself back. However, unlike she was no doubt expecting, Kaen was actually able to react to this. Kicking off the ground, Kaen pursued her, spinning just as Alkaid began to land. Just as Alkaid's feet would hit the ground, she'd be met by Kaen's foot as he completed his spinning back kick towards Alkaid's abdominals.
Kaen wasn't done though. If his kick connected, Alkaid likely would have been considerably winded by the blow. Kaen stepped in to grab her head and drag it down as his knee shot up, intending to meet her face halfway. A Muay Thai kickboxing attack-- Kao Loi. "Yare yare.... not using my strength properly. We can't have that. Why don't you demonstrate, Alkaid-taichou." Kaen stated with a grin. His blood was pumping and he was exhilarated. He was enjoying this. Win or lose, Kaen enjoyed fighting, for the sheer sake of fighting itself. Alkaid could likely read this in his eyes. He would likely have found a good place in the 11th squad. Why had he joined squad 7 then?
