"Spoken like someone who's never actually fought some of the guys out there. Tons of enemies will do that. You'll find a lot of your opponent's are a sadistic lot, actually, who love to draw out their fights." Anger flashed through Kubi's mind, though he kept it hidden. "Perhaps. He said shortly.
___
He was slammed to the ground. Impossible! It was simply was! Well, to Kubi's mind, anyway. How could it be possible that he had taken him down so easily?! Kubi's nose was bleeding, most likely broken. Kubi mentally cursed as he lay on the ground, dazed. How had he been defeated so easily? He thought. But no, he wasn't down yet. Then, he heard Kaen speak.
"Besides. Training's not supposed to be done at full strength. Fight at full strength ALL the time, and you'll only get injured. Injury means you gotta take time off, or risk making your injury worse. Time spent off, is time not spent training. Plus, if you train full-out all the time, you'll tire yourself out, and it just means you won't be able to train as long. And unfortunately, that won't give you a case of quality over quantity. Besides, I'm not your enemy, I'm your sparring partner." Kubi believed him, the matter-of-fact tone in his voice attested to the truth, but Kubi was in shock. His philosophy was crashing around his ears. But, it seemed Kaen wasn't done teaching Kubi a lesson.
He was kicked. Hard. Still dazed from the palm strike, it would be impossible for him to dodge. Besides, with Kaen's speed, it would be a futile effort. So, it connected, so fast Kubi was flying across the room before he felt the pain. A gasp came from his throat, then he slammed into the wall. A strangled moan escaped his throat. Kaen spoke. "I used to think like you. Then I ended up in the medical ward for three months, healing from having broken most of the bones in my body, and tearing a ton of muscles. Believe me, missing out on three months of training because you don't know how to pace yourself is only gonna put you behind the pack."
Kubi's mind was reeling. He ... was right?! Was he? Kubi gritted his teeth. A philosophy of lifetimes, crashing around his ears. How was this possible? Kubi struggled to stand, his lip cut, his nose broken, his breath coming short, ragged gasps. Then, he spoke. "I ... believe you. But I also believe in honor, and justice. I cannot disgrace an enemy or myself by fighting at anything less than full power. It besmirches their name." He said, shakily raising his fists again. He didn't try for an attack; it was all he could do to just try to fend off the attacks, and hope to withstand the onslaught, like a sapling in the middle of a hurricane.
